5th Avenue Deli & Catering Co — Restaurant in Carmel-by-the-Sea

Such a frustrating experience with this business. We chose them to cater our small wedding of fourteen.

We called ahead several times in the coming weeks to make sure we could place an order in advance for it. Got the confirmation from the woman on the phone and she confirmed that our order was in place and that we can pay on the day of.

Again, we called several times to make sure it was confirmed and they said it will be ready at 10AM the day of the wedding. We tried to email about the order but their email address did not work and the emails were always rejected when we tried to send. We checked over and over to make sure it matched, which it did. This is why we called a few times, just to be certain we had everything in order.

On the day of the wedding, my wife goes to pick up the order at 10:00AM. They say they do not have the order. My wife says she confirmed over the phone and the woman was rude to her and asked if she emailed. My wife tried to explain that the email they provided did not work, but the woman cut her off, saying, "well we didn't get it then." Super rude, super unprofessional. My wife insists that we called and confirmed. The woman goes to the back and shortly returns to ask if it was under our name, to which we say YES. They said they will start the order.

So, to recap, the business was rude to us, unprofessional, would not let us explain the situation, and it turns out they had the order all along! This set back our wedding significantly and was such a frustrating experience. I'm glad the food was good at least, but at what cost?

Visited this spot after a hike. The shop was filled with customers, yet each staff member remained calm, patient, and efficient. I was impressed by the guy taking my order. He gave excellent suggestions and answered my questions. I noticed the cashier went above and beyond. If a customer didn't pick up their order when called I saw him go out to the person and hand it directly to them. He even chased down another customer when they forgot to grab the rest of their order!

Food was exactly what I needed. Fresh fruit, broccoli salad, samosas, cold beverages and more. They even carried the family size chips. Perfect spot to eat solo or if with groups!

I’ve never been so disappointed by a sandwich as I was by 5th Ave Deli. My wife and I came in to pick up two turkey sandwiches to bring down to Big Sur on our roadtrip. We get to a beautiful overlook to eat them, open them up, and we were just stunned. Two slices of turkey, one slice of cheese, two tomatoes, and one piece of lettuce. They were candidly the most pathetic sandwiches we’ve ever seen.
