The restaurant is located in a little neighborhood mall in Carrollton, next to a Mochinut (you've gotta try that). Parking in front of the restaurant is really tough on a Saturday night, so I'd suggest going early or just parking on the south side where there is a huge parking lot! We arrived pretty early - about 5:40 and were a little surprised to walk in and see a line of people right inside the doorway. No masks required and none worn, except by the staff. We were celebrating my sister's birthday. She and I ducked immediately back outside, since we still don't get out much. We donned our masks and went back in. Her daughter found out the wait was about 20 minutes and got a pager, so we went next door to check out the Mochinuts (see my review on this great place). We returned before the pager went off and only had to wait a minute or so for a booth towards the back. It was a tiny booth, enough for two people sitting right next to each other and one chair on the opposite side. I was glad it was on the end - no social-distancing going on in there. I eat sushi often enough to know I didn't want the usual, so I wanted to check out their menu selections. Our server came over quickly to get our drink orders, then came back twice more to see if we were ready to order. Since it was our 1st time, we needed a minute - I felt a little pressured. I ordered the miso soup ($1.70) for a starter. It arrived warm, not hot and was not as good as I was hoping. My sis & niece ordered the appetizer tempura. I had a bite to compare it to what I've had before - it wasn't bad but since it was fried, it should have been hotter-fresher. It included a huge broccoli (?) stalk, potato, squash & carrot. I ordered the oishi roll ($16.35) because I LOVE cucumber rolls (I tend to pick off most of my rice, so cucumber-wrapped rolls are such a nice change). They were large and quite stuffed, which made it difficult to pick up without the weight of the mixture in the middle falling out. I don't use chopsticks every day, so it was probably a user-error, lol. My niece ordered the crazy mom ($8.95) - it was basically just the rainbow deep-fried. I don't usually like the fried rolls but this one was pretty good. She ordered the rainbow roll ($15.35) for my sis, who didn't know what to order. Of course the dishes were all communal... so I tried a couple of pieces of the rainbow roll. I like to pick off the piece of fish & eat it by itself. The spicy tuna was fresh and tasty but the yellowtail, which isn't a particularly strong taste, tasted odd, due to the sauce that was drizzled over it. The pieces on the rainbow roll were huge - stuffed with crabmeat mixture (way too much cream cheese) and large size around, making it super hard to maneuver! I seriously need to get better with my stix! But honestly, I like a size that will easily fit in my mouth because when I have to bite into it, it always falls apart. No complaints about the size - more value for your money. The service was very good, given that every table was occupied and moving at a fast pace. My water was filled twice during our meal - part of what earned it the 5 stars. I'll def return for happy hour! Loved the beautiful decor - the trees made you feel like you were outside! Note - some of their prices have gone up from the online...
Read moreMan. I really wanted to love and support this place. It came highly recommended by a friend and many google reviews. But there is nothing I would come back here for. The receptionist and waitress was very friendly and smiled at me kindly the whole time. I really appreciated that as a first time patron-it made me feel at home.
I placed a togo order and told the waitress I wanted to have a sake and a couple pieces of sushi while I waited for my order. The sushi bar had innumerable layers of lacquer, a sticky underside, and smelled strongly of fish (not the fresh organ meat smell of newly butchered fish, but that of sea animals swimming in gooey plastic for days on end) Iâm not saying that was the case here. It was just the smell. They did not offer me a drink, menu, or water while I waited. No worries. Maybe there was a misunderstand in communication. So I order a sake and sea urchin sushi which was on the specials list. They were out of sea urchin and the sushi chef suggested a toro instead. Not a good substitution but I went ahead and took his suggestion. I have to be honest in saying I was a bit afraid to not spit out the half I bit off. It looked, felt and smelled like it had been thawed in a rushed manner in hot water. The soy sauce glaze atop was lovely from what I could ascertain though and I WISH it was presented on a better cut of fish! The sake finally came out (after the 3rd order, and end of my dine in experience) and was served on a sticky, smelly carafe that had mold marks on the inside and chips on the cups âšď¸ The to go was very sloppy and disappointing as well. I opened the box at the sushi bar hoping to be pleasantly surprised. Instead I took one bite of each roll and tossed it đ Uneven amounts of fish to rice ratio. Dry. Just plain bad cuts of fish. Half cooked, half raw. Scales on the skin. Bone on the inside of the white fish. The rice was overcooked. The cuts were soo sloppy everything was falling apart. The Yakult would be a fantastic touch but it was warm and one was chunky, which I tossed after the track order of the evening.
I gave two stars because not everyone has had fresh fish in Dallas and a late night meal, with very large portions, and a smiling face can be a saving grace to...
Read moreThe place has always looked pretty and the food USED to be decent, but seems like itâs in rapid decline. Tuesday night, fair amount of patrons in the place. It took a while for anyone to pay attention to us standing at the front area waiting to be seated, we were then seen by a kind waiter who directed us to sit wherever we pleased. He gave us the menus and we didnât get to interact with him again. Ordered the usual gyoza and takoyaki as appetizers. Gyoza: 6/10 They were okay, but lacked in seasoning. They were pan fried, but also still slightly soggy, maybe thatâs a preference thing. Takoyaki: 7/10 Good and no real complaints. Ordered the Oishi roll and thatâs where we encountered the largest problem. Canât rate their taste as I didnât touch them at all when I compared how they look on the menu vs what I got in person - pictured below. I tried being polite and had my boyfriend ask the waiter if they had changed the item on the menu in terms of description/ingredients and he gave us such an odd reaction. At first he feigned misunderstanding as if we were speaking some sort of unknown language. (waiter seemed to be a fluent english speaker)We then clarified and asked again about it being changed, because we saw that it wasnât looking the same as on the menu. There was no salmon visible at all and in the photo it looks like a nice, sizable wrap of salmon in the roll. I assumed maybe it was forgotten and only the tuna was added. He came back and had clearly picked around one of the rolls to âshow us the salmonâ at that point I wanted nothing to do with the item- mind you I had NOT touched it at all and only looked at it and decided it was not what I imagined it being from the menu pictures alone- so I tried asking if we could pay for what we ate and get the rolls comped. He promptly laughed and said he couldnât do that. I was throughly confused and asked if we were looking at two different things and he continued with âshowing us the salmonâ in the rolls. I was promptly done with the situation and requested my bill. Didnât end up touching the rolls at all even after being told we had to pay and paid full price. Absolutely awful service all the way around and sad to say Iâll never come back to this once...
