Absolutely love this place!! As a Peruvian who has grown up on the most delicious food EVER, I'm always on the hunt for a little taste of Peru. I came here for a late lunch while in Carrollton, ready for some rotisserie chicken. "Pollo a la brasa" is like the Peruvian version of fast food, like our KFC. The chicken cooked this way is super juicy and flavorful, spiced to perfection. The order of chicken usually comes with a set of fries and a salad - which are the combos that Munay offers. So again - I was super stoked.
I came to treat my boyfriend (and myself) to a Peruvian lunch around 2 pm on a Sunday. There was ample parking, and I was pleased to see the simple and warm, colorful decor and several families scattered throughout the restaurant. The staff was super friendly, welcoming, and timely. Prices looked pretty affordable for the amount of food that I saw on the tables, so we ordered a little bit of everything - the whole chicken/fries combo, anticuchos, and a pitcher of fresh-made Chicha Morada (must, MUST get this). Sweets are my kryptonite, so I also preordered some picarones for dessert.
The chicken was so delicious! Super juicy, as expected. Perhaps it was the hunger that makes my memory hazy or perhaps it's that I reverted back to a 4-year-old version of myself, but when I finally looked up from my food, I'd devoured half a chicken, even the white meat - that's right, I said white meat (it's that good) - and the anticuchos came in. I thought about slowing down, but then ravenously consumed those as well. These came with some potatoes, since we Peruvians love our potatoes. In case you haven't tried them before, anitcuchos are beef heart skewers that are marinated in aji panca and other seasonings. They're a staple of Peruvian street food! The ones at Munay taste JUST like the ones I used to buy on the streets of Lima as a child. Don't be shy, try one!
The Chicha Morada was incredible. Definitely not from a bottle, and I ended up taking a jar home because my boyfriend enjoyed it so much! He was amazed when I told him that it was made from purple corn! Just be careful - it'll stain your clothes if you spill. Last but not least - the picarones. Now, beware: these were the reason I was a chubby child. They're a type of doughnut made of squash and sweet potato, and when they're hot, they're the kind of airy and crunchy that you can only dream of. The anise seeds within the doughnut deepened the flavor of the actual dessert, and the fig dipping sauce was perfecccttt.
Basically, I had to be rolled out of this restaurant, and I took my many leftovers with me. Critics (e.g. my Columbian boyfriend) rave, and I even got him to admit that Peruvian food might be better than Columbian food. THIS IS A BIG DEAL, Latinos take a lot of pride in their food!! I still have dreams about this food and will go back whenever I have a chance! Definitely bring an appetite and some hungry friends -...
Read moreI and my wife has been going to Munay for more than a year now. We go there almost once or twice biweekly. However, today on 09/27/2018 was our worst experience so far. The little girl who was working in front desk treated us in the worst way possible. We ordered half chicken with lucuma ice cream. When the girl bought us our food she offered and said I will bring some more fries for you guys. we were almost done with our food but she did not bring our fries. We went and told her our fries are almost finished can she bring some more. I ate most of the fries, because my wife was waiting on some fries she offered.
We could see her through wall glasses that she was in her phone texting even after requesting her second time for fries. Meanwhile, our fries were finished and my wife, she had all her chicken left out waiting for fries. I decided to ask just for our ice cream and told my wife not to worry about fries. I went third time requesting them to bring our ice cream. As I can see through wall glass that she was watching us too because as I stood up she started walking inside the kitchen. When the owner came out I told him we had our ice-cream and we are waiting for it.
The little girl came out peaking through the customer area looked towards the end of the restaurant and went back in, she knows that the ice cream was ours as she charged us for it. However, she acted as if she does not know to whom does the ice cream belong to. I and my wife decided we had enough then as we went towards the counter she walked back into the kitchen again. Then when we both went to the counter she came out with fries after few minutes. We told her we do not want the fries nor the ice cream and asked her for our refund for ice-cream. However, the biggest tragedy was when we asked for a refund the kitchen door opened and the owner could hear what's going on and he did not even bothered to ask what is going on to the little girl in the front desk. After being there customer for more than a year now.
With such a person on the front desk, this restaurant is...
Read moreSo just to give a little background on me, I am an american that has lived in Peru for 2 years and I am married to a Peruvian. I am familiar with Peruvian food. I was visiting in Dallas so we looked up Pollo a la Brasa and Munay's was reccomended. We ordered a whole chicken, anticuchos, and picarones. Plus Inca Cola because it is a treat when we can find it. The chicken was good, very moist good size and seasoned well. It is not the best I have had by far but good all the same. The dipping sauce they had was differently flavored from what I am used to but is was good and I ate it on everything. The anticuchos surprised me, they were amazing. The only time I have had better was in Peru from one place I used to go. The anticucho was sliced thicker than usual but was cooked to perfection it was so tender and seasoned great. The picarones were a disappointment the flavor was ok but they were tough and chewy and the dipping sauce was much heavier than what I am used to. All in all if I lived around here I would definitely come back and get the pollo a la brasa and anticuchos. I would reccomend to anyone who is looking to try Peruvian food or who already likes it.
Now to describe the restaurant itself it does not look like much from the outside and the inside is not a lot better. I mean it is a simple place with table and chairs. If you are one of those people that can't eat somewhere that may look a little dirty, then you might want to avoid this place. It was not disgusting to me and I had no problem eating there but I also eat from street carts In Peru so i am not super picky is what...
