I have been to the Gonza in North Raleigh and to the Wake Forest location and was excited when the Waverly location opened. We were a group of 8 and were able to make a reservation via the phone a day prior. They explained that they had a few other large parties at the same time and would do their best to accommodate. Opentable was available yet capped at 6 people. Our table at the open window was all set when we arrived and it was really the best seat in the house. We could look outside on the Waverly plaza and the weather was gorgeous. As with all other Gonza locations, stars line the ceilings and Colombian and South American pop icons like Shakira, Juanes and others are plastered on the wall. Mexican rock and loud music pumps from the speakers and the atmosphere is lively. The decor is fun with the luchador mask on the menus, black walls and neon highlights. The bar is located on the left of the restaurant and it also looked like they had a semi-private space. The restaurant was packed and am glad we found this Cary hot spot. Chips and fresh chunky salsa are provided and I really loved the tomato salsa. We also ordered the guacamole and queso dip and both were fresh, creamy and authentic. The menu at Gonza is simple where you don't have too many choices. You have your choice or tacos (3 for $11-14) and they range from pastor pork to chicken to steak to shrimp. They have a fish of the day as well and fajitas and enchiladas. I ordered the chile relleno and was really happy with my decision. It was presented beautifully and stuffed with chicken tinga and fresh flavors. I would get that again next time because to me the tacos are a bit small. The restaurant has lunch hours and then opens again for dinner. The food and atmosphere and location will keep me coming back and thank you for such a fun and memorable...
Read moreMy husband and I had a late lunch at Ganza recently. We were one of about three tables that were sitting in the restraunt at the time. We were greeted by the “team” service of Becca and Thomas, I believe their names were. The experience started out nicely. We finished our chips and salsa waiting for our meals to arrive. We unfortunately watched what seemed to be the majority of the staff sit in a glass doored private break room, while eating and socializing. Although you cannot be to upset about not getting a refill on your complimentary chips and salsa, it would have been nice to have had service that we were not watching standing around while we sat without. So our food came out and it was pretty good, nothing spectacular nothing terrible about it. What was terrible was that between our TWO servers both my husband and my own glass of water ran out completely, TWICE! We sat for quite a while with no refills and had to ask multiple servers to refill the water glasses for us. We have both been in the service industry and wouldn’t comment on bad service unless it was exceptionally bad! For having two servers in a slow restraunt at the time, glasses should not go empty and we should not have to at multiple points in the dining experience look around for our servers to tend to us as we are supporting the company by deciding to dine there and are paying customers. I don’t believe we will be going to Ganza any longer after the service we were provided this last time. Things like this make and break experiences in restraunts, no matter how good...
Read moreUpdate: I went back for another visit with some friends and had a much better experience this time. The food was excellent as always and this time, the service was on point. We were well taken care of and our waitress made sure we had what we needed at all times. Very happy with the experience this time and will probably visit again in the not so distant future. Great job turning things around!!
As with the other locations I have been to, excellent food. In terms of the staff, they need some more training since they haven't been open that long. I used to go to the original location once a week for about a year, so I know how things go ... Smooth. Gonza runs a tight ship there, as does Carlos in Durham.
We had practically no waitress after ordering our food. I had to ask for chips and salsa, which should never happen. And then had to wait 10+ minutes to get my bill paid, while our original waitress was sweeping the floor behind us, somewhat oblivious to the fact we were ready to go. Three strikes right there. Last thing is the music was turned up way too loud, making it nearly impossible to have a conversation. Considering what I know and who I know, these things shouldn't be happening and I hope this location gets their act together.
Again, amazing food but disappointing service here. I'll go back to see if they can turn this around, otherwise a conversation with the manager may be in order. I would hate to have to reserve my business for the other locations where they take good care of...
