Five Guys — Restaurant in Castroville

I was really looking forward to this new Five Guys opening in the Alamo Ranch area. It’s now the closest one to me, and my wife and I are longtime fans of the brand. We’ve given this location three separate tries, and unfortunately, it’s been a letdown each time.

The biggest issue has been the fries. Every visit, they’ve only filled the cup and skipped the signature Five Guys overflow into the bag. That extra scoop is a major part of the experience. When the fries are priced higher than average, customers definitely notice when they’re shorted. Once might be an oversight. Three times in a row tells me they’re either cutting corners or not properly training their staff.

The burgers were okay, but the patties didn’t have the usual seasoning we expect. Nothing was terrible, but nothing stood out. The restaurant is clean since it’s new, and the staff has been fine. Not rude, but not particularly friendly or engaging either.

We were really excited when this location opened since it's so close to our place. A few days after the grand opening, we stopped by, and I tried ordering a grilled cheese burger. Unfortunately, the cashier seemed confused and gave me a regular cheeseburger instead. I was disappointed, especially since the burger was dry and didn’t match what I’m used to at Five Guys. However, we decided to give it another shot. This time, we explained to the cashier that we wanted a grilled cheese with a patty, and she replied, “Oh, you mean a patty melt? It’s just not on the menu.” I was thrilled! From now on, that's how I’ll order it. The toast on the melt was perfectly buttered and grilled, with just the right amount of melted cheese, and the patty was seasoned and cooked to perfection. Ordered a cheese burger with onions and pickles. Two simple ingredients added to the burger and they managed to screw that up and gave me onions and lettus. My order was a pick up order which the fries weren't ready for yet when I got there. I literally stood and watched them cook the fries. They also screwed this up. They barely cooked them leaving them extremely soggy and almost inedible. The entire place was empty at 5 pm on a Friday. Maybe that should have been my sign that things were not going to be good.
