Mattenga's Pizzeria Alamo Ranch — Restaurant in Castroville

We dined in at Mattenga’s Pizzeria on a Friday evening and had a great experience. • We ordered a family size pepperoni pizza, and it was just enough for three adults. (We also had 2 sides) The pizza had a fresh flavorful taste with the right balance of toppings. •The mild wings were some of the best I’ve had in a while. They were perfectly crispy with great flavor. The Jalapeño Ranch was good! •The Caprese salad isn’t your typical Caprese but it was still fresh. It included spinach, tomatoes, cheese, and balsamic, which made for a nice twist on the classic. •They offer a decent selection of bottled and canned beer. While they don’t have an ice or soda machine, they do offer a selection of bottled beverages, including sweet tea & sodas.

No waiters here, you order at the counter and seat yourself, but someone did stop by to check on us. The dining area is small, with approximately 30 seats, and there was also a small outdoor table with four chairs.

Despite the dining room being semi-full and busy with takeout orders, our food came out quickly, which was impressive.

I've been excited for this place to open in AR and I was a little disappointed in our first experience. While taking my order, the young man answered a call and started taking a telephone order. After a minute or so, another young man stepped in to take our order. We opted to dine in because we wanted the pizza to be hot and fresh when we tried it. We sat down waiting for our pizza and several people came in and left with their pizzas and a young couple (I'm assuming one of them worked there) came in and the 2 employees spent the rest of the time talking and joking around with them. After about 35 minutes and no pizza, I went to the counter and asked about our order and it was found sitting on top of the oven in a box. Needless to say, I was a little irritated. We asked for plates and sat down to eat our pizza and it was obvious it had been sitting out for a bit as the pizza was no longer hot and fresh and the crust was getting soggy.
