Let me first say that I'm a total street taco addict. It's my one TRUE vice. That being said, my wife and I have had a difficult time finding authentic street tacos here in the Palm Springs area, which has been totally disappointing considering the taco game in San Diego is so off the chain.
Anyways, back to Carreta's.... I stopped in for lunch after driving past this place probably a dozen times. I typically opt for a couple of carnitas tacos at any joint that I visit for the first time. The first thing. noticed was that you get a TON of meat on these tacos. Simple garnishments of onion and cilantro are used to finish these off, but I'd say the amount of meat you get on these takes them out of the street taco category, and I'm not mad about it. Two corn tortillas for each taco and they are filing for sure. A little salsa verde and lunch was a win.
The crisp on the carnitas was better than any place we've tried in the lat 9 months of being here. The meat was... for the lack of a better word - bland. This seems to be common in this area. The pork tastes like it came out of a slow cooker with vey minimal seasoning/spices. That's my only complaint though. The service was on point, the place was clean - VERY clean - and the people working there were super friendly (also something that seems to be rare in the PS area).
It's safe to say that when we pull out of town this week and onto our next adventure, that Carreta's will hold the spot of our favorite taco spot in the Palm Springs area. I'm still shocked that it doesn't seem like anyone is doing true, authentic street tacos in...
Read moreLet me get the bad out of the way first. I ordered the hard shell beef tacos and the meat seemed like it had been boiled without much, if any, seasoning and then put in a blender. I've never seen anything like it. I took the taco apart after a couple of bites to make sure there was actual meat in the taco because I couldn't taste it or feel any texture. I love tender meat but this was not tender, it was something else. I ended up taking the taco apart and using the shell and cheese to scoop up their amazing beans and rice and that was lunch. The shells were big, fresh and with just enough crunch and their spicy salsa is great. Also, the service was very friendly and didn't make me feel like I was an...
Read moreFood wasn't bad (and I consider myself a connossuer of Mexican food) but what left a bad taste in my mouth was the snotty service and the over-charging. I ordered two child burritos no beans only ground beef for my two toddlers. I was charged $12.50. I thought it was a simple mistake but the cook said it was because I ordered extra beaf. When I asked to be refunded the excess charge the young employee offered me $2.50 refund. No manager was available and the cook was calling all the shots. I ended up paying $10.00 for two TacoBell-size burritos. I was treated like a deadbeat for asking for my money back. ...
