We went there because Georgian food was new to us and we wanted to celebrate an event with a relaxed lunch. Below average food and a rude server spoiled it for us.
We ordered the flatbread with the vegetables and the cucumber appetizers. The vegetables were ok but the flatbread was below average. Cucumbers were not worth the price at all and too sour for our taste. We then ordered the entrees. When I asked the waitress whether the soup was a thick soup, she acted as if she couldn’t understand my accent, though her English was fluent and in a decade in this country, I have never had a problem with my (Indian) accent. I had to repeat my question a few times before she understood. I thought “never mind, she’s not from here”. So then I ordered a kebab. My husband ordered one of the chicken entrees. We ordered at the same time and were not told that there would be over 20 minutes between the two entrees.
Husband’s entree was brought out about 10 minutes later but we waited and waited for the kebabs. After about 20 minutes, we called the waitress and when I asked, she stared at me and said, “You ordered late and kebabs take at least 25 minutes “. So the fact that we were sitting there waiting for my food was clearly my fault! And no, we didn’t order late! We ordered both entrees right after the appetizers. We have ordered kebabs in many other places before and nowhere did we wait this long. If you can’t bring out all entrees at roughly the same time, then you need to tell the customer when the order is placed, to give them the option of ordering something else. Her patronizing attitude just put me off.
I decided to leave after packing up the kebab. Though the quantity of meat was good, the taste was meh…it was served with a tiny amount of rice and greens and a sauce. The chicken entree was the only thing out of everything we ordered that we liked.
With 2 cocktails, we spent $97 for 2 adults. Even leaving aside the rudeness, the food (both taste and portion size) wasn’t worth spending that much on. We were ready to spend but now feel we wasted our money.
I will give the waitress the benefit of doubt and put down her behavior to lack of training and not racism. Even average food can be tolerated once in a while provided the servers know how to do their job. In this case, neither the food nor the service was worth our...
Read moreGeorgian Gem in Austin — A Must-Visit! My kids absolutely love khachapuri and khinkali, so you can imagine their excitement when we found out that a Georgian restaurant will be opened in Austin! Huge thanks to the owners — making khachapuri at home is quite the challenge, and I honestly couldn’t have done it a second time. We visited over the weekend and quickly realized we should have made a reservation in advance — this place is popular for a reason! That said, we were still seated, and I’m so grateful to the owner for making it work, especially since I had promised my son we’d go. The kids were 100% in Georgian food mode, and the experience did not disappoint. One of the biggest surprises was the non-alcoholic mocktails — truly the best I’ve ever had in the U.S. I had the green mocktail , my husband tried the red — both were absolutely delicious. Honestly, with drinks like that, who needs alcohol? The khinkali were tasty, juicy, fresh, and the khachapuri was everything we hoped for — just keep in mind, it’s huge! My 9-year-old daughter ambitiously tried to finish one by herself but didn’t quite realize the scale. The restaurant itself is neat and welcoming, clearly loved by people- there were a lot of customers. And I have to share a fun little moment: we were seated near a guy, thanks to which I got a great preview of the entire menu!. He ordered everything — wine flight, appetizers, salads, skewers, khinkali, soup…it felt like I was watching a scene from Ratatouille with some secret critic, otherwise how a regular person can eat that much?! We saw the guests at the next table enjoying their éclairs, which looked yummy, but we were way too full from the khachapuri to even think about dessert. Next time for sure! Wishing the owners much success and lots of happy customers. Opening a restaurant with such a specific national cuisine in Austin sure takes a lot of effort , and they’re doing a fantastic job. If there are any, small hiccups I’m confident they’ll smooth them out quickly. I haven’t noticed any, by the way. Highly recommend for families, friends, and groups. One thing I forgot to ask — do they offer gift cards or certificates? That would be such a great present for...
Read moreMy husband and I regularly consumed khachapuri at least once a month prior to moving to the area, and was immediately thrilled to find out that, not only was a Georgian restaurant opening nearby, they would also serve khachapuri.
We walked into the restaurant with no reservations and were immediately seated.
Ambiance: The place was modern yet cozy, with a lovely albeit unusual combination of interior colors that I found interesting but comfortable.
Service: The service was nice & amicable, albeit we were forgotten for a bit, which makes sense because they were busy.
Food: We ordered potatoes & herring, mushroom khinkali, eggplant roll, khachapuri, a couple of Georgian wines, Prague cake, espresso & green tea.
• Potatoes & herring - This dish was easily our favorite! The combination of flavors reminded me of a snack I ate a lot in my childhood. The waitress commented that it’s not often that Americans order this dish, which, I like to think, speaks to our adventurous palates.
• Eggplant rolls - This was good and well-cooked. However, I wish the toppings were also incorporated in the cream cheese filling. It has an overwhelmingly cream cheese taste & loses a lot of its more subtle flavors in the process.
• Mushroom khinkali - I thoroughly enjoy great takes in mushroom and this was a thoughtfully prepared piece of mushroom dish. The dumpling dough was almost well-cooked (could do with a half a minute more) but was overall pleasant to eat.
• Khachapuri - This was certainly higher quality khachapuri than we’ve ever had before. The cheese & runny yolk were well-balanced & played perfectly together in terms of both texture & flavor. The bread was so fresh & fantastically done. I’m literally salivating at the thought of the khachapuri.
• Prague cake - The base cake was a tad but dry but was alleviated by the chocolate sauce & a generous heap of frosting as a topping and in between layers.
• Espresso - Good but nothing to write home about. Perfect to consume with cake.
Final Thoughts: Suffice to say, this place has been added to our rotation of restaurants and I’m already...
