Udom Thai came recommended to us and we have been wanting to do Thai for a while. Seemed like a no brainer choice based off that recommendation and Google reviews. Sadly they fell short despite overwhelmingly good word of mouth.
Aesthetically Udom Thai is a is a nice looking restaurant and has a good layout for tables. Chairs are a little hard, which is probably noticeable when waiting for an extended period for your meal. It feels like a modern Asian restaurant and was very clean.
Sometimes a bad night for the staff is a bad night. The waitress admitted they were short staffed, after we had to ask where out order was. It took over a half hour between ordering food and food on the table. As an FYI the restaurant was about half full, so it was not slammed at all so whatever is going on in back we felt it as a customer.
Service was not very good, this may point back to being short staffed. However that falls under their problem, not mine. The other waiter spoke poor to broken English and was not especially helpful. His only words of wisdom were that great Thai food takes time. In retrospect, those may have been poor word choices because the food must be outstanding if this point is made.
A few minutes later we got to see if this was true. We finally get to the point of going to a restaurant: eating.
We ordered a garlic beef dish, pad thai w/ chicken and yellow curry with chicken. Included was rice in a nifty metal serving bowl, which was barely half full... so hard to tell how long it had been sitting around. Not very good prep work, which again may be a staffing issue.
The garlic beef tasted better than it looked. The presentation was sloppy and really poor knife skills were shown by the chef. The cabbage and beef in-particular were wildly different in size and shape. However it did taste good, though the garlic sauce could have stood to have been cooked more and have a slightly more umami flavor to balance out the garlic .
The pad thai to me tasted like noodles washed in fish sauce and then thrown on a plate. It was a one note dish to three out of four of us. Coincidentally the three who have no great love of fish sauce. It looked nice and the noodles themselves were good, but that is as far as it went. I finished what I took and the other two of shoveled their's onto the one who did like it.
The yellow chicken curry looked right and tasted right. We went with medium heat and it was not overpowering. For me I could have gone with the hot without issue. Couple problems though. First the potatoes in it were a hair under cooked (cooked food is kinda important...). There also could have been more in the dish regarding the non-curry ingredients.
By consensus one good dish, one uneven dish and an unsuccessful dish. The portions themselves were on the smaller side of normal but not like many Thai places in which portions are microscopic. Prices were reasonable, which makes Udom Thai better than many other Thai restaurants...
Udom Thai was more disappointing than bad. Perhaps this experience points to an incredibly off night for the staff. As this was our first impression I would have a difficult time going back for a second time or recommending it to anyone. If I could give 2.5 stars I would, but I will round up to three as it really was mediocre and...
Read moreFirst and foremost, this place has great food at a reasonable price. My fiancee and I have been ordering from them for about a year now and their food is definitely one of the better Asian food places in the south metro area. My fiancee is vegan and they have a decent amount of options for her as well which can be pretty hard to find at a Thai food restaurant. Sadly, we've also dealt with a decent amount of frustration in ordering from them as well.
The wait time for food at this place is typically terrible. Even on a random weekday you're looking at at least an hour if not longer to get your food. Their online order time estimates are usually inaccurate too with your food typically being 10-30 minutes past the estimated wait time. Yes, that means sometimes you'll have to wait an hour and a half to two hours for your food.
And look, I get it; food options have become more limited during COVID, but this sort of demand would typically be a sign to any business owner to hire more staff to meet that demand. I have no idea how many people are in the kitchen, but with wait times like this they easily need to double their staff in order to prevent people from having to eat hours past when they intended too.
But Udom Thai should absolutely keep doing what they're doing with their food, but they really need to hire some more staff to reduce the ridiculous wait times customers have to deal with in...
Read moreAvoid this place like the plague. They have an answering machine that goes on before connecting to a human (not sure this is the right application). I ordered on Yelp which I tend to do all the time on the weekends when my family orders in. This experience was the worst one I’ve EVER had due to negligence at this restaurant. We ordered cashew chicken and pad see-ew which is our favorite at other restaurants. When we got the order it was completely wrong and to add to the issue they sent us items with peanut to a house with allergies. When trying to call the restaurant I was continuously ignored on purpose for about 15 min with their service. I hung up and called from my wife’s phone and they answered right away (fishy if you ask me). When I spoke to them and explained the issue they refused to deliver me the new dishes because we were ONE mile outside of the delivery “zone” (bad owner or manager on this call). I let them know a review would be posted about this experience and they had no reservations about it... big mistake.
I would try to find any other place than this one to avoid not eating for hours due to the restaurant messing up big time on several accounts.
Advice to the restaurant... make your customers happy at the expense of $10.00 their...
