Upon first visit, the service was pleasant and efficient by the standards of a counter-order joint. Having tried the original food truck a few times, my expectations for the food were moderately high but a generous portion of the astounding chipotle pesto kicked my breakfast bowl soundly above them. The eggs were perfect and the meat was tasty high quality stuff. Normally I like my hash browns crispy but I'd eat these floppy orange ones all day; whatever else is going on, Cracked knows how to season.
However, at least on my first visit, they failed thoroughly when it came to beverages. The cinnamon and starchy/creaminess of my girlfriend's horchata was overpowered by far too much sugar even for her generally sweet toothed palette, and my coffee tasted like sour dirt. I'd say it's in about my top three worst cups of coffee I've had, and that's just unacceptable in a breakfast joint.
Maybe I picked just the wrong day to try Cracked. I'll update this review if I get a chance to try it again; certainly the food (and the late night hours) warrant it. Till then my advice has to be "stick to water or...
Read moreIf you want breakfast in Champaign, you better come to Cracked! The food here is so good and the concoctions of savory goodness are creative and ideal. I had the Sloppy Jose, which is a chorizo sandwich with guacamole, hash brown, and a fried egg. I loved this sandwich, especially with the sauce provided at the tables. I also tried the French toast bites. I asked for extra cinnamon sugar and mixed it in with lots of syrup. After that added load of sugar, the bites were good, but I probably do not recommend. Coffee is good. The atmosphere is nice and has U of I stuff everywhere. Service was good but the sandwiches took forever to be made. Luckily, the tasted very good to make up for it. I will definitely be coming back to Cracked to try more items...
Read moreI was staying in town for the weekend and this was quick and easy breakfast in a very short walk from the Union.
I ordered the Vegasm breakfast sandwich and a decaf coffee. The sandwich was excellent, a great mix of flavors and very filling. The bread was flakey and falling apart a bit, which in my book is pretty much perfect for a breakfast sandwich. No complaints!
They didn't have decaf coffee ready when I showed up so they made it fresh. It was darker than i normally enjoy but a perfectly fine cup of coffee.
I was about to leave and found out they had sweet potato tots so now I have something to try if I get a chance to make it back before I...
