Mala Parlor Hot Pot — Restaurant in Champaign

This new hot pot place is nice with good food. The atmosphere is nice and the restaurant is very clean, although it's dead silent in there. They really should play music. We were the only people in there for lunch and it was so awkward and silent until they turned on the stove and there was some noise to fill the air. I've never been in a restaurant like that before. The food is good- the meat is very high quality, though it's very expensive for what you get. I've been to other hot pot places where it's a flat fee, usually $30/person, and it's all you can eat. We spent $80 on 3 people (only 2 of which ate meat) and didn't get nearly as much food as we would've somewhere like Happy Lamb. I also wish the plates were larger, and I would appreciate ceramic plates with drinking glasses. Everything was plastic which felt cheap and inappropriate considering the prices. I’ve been to Mala Parlor a couple of times now, and it’s quickly become one of my favorite spots for hot pot. The ingredients are always fresh, and they have such a great variety to choose from—it’s perfect whether you’re going with friends or just craving something comforting on your own.

The broth is the real star here. It’s rich, flavorful, and just the right level of spicy (though you can adjust it to your taste). The staff is super friendly and attentive, always ready to help if you’re not sure what to order.
