I have never been SO DISAPPOINTED in non-franchise and semi local restaurant like i did with Boxcar Betty’s in west Ashley. I work at a very reputable place of business who was treating us for lunch. My team picked boxcar as we believe in supporting local business, especially during times like this, where many businesses are suffering. Our order was for about 14 people. I called and a very pleasant young man started taking my Order whom i let know it will be somewhat of a large order. As we were on the last person’s order, his manager, Alley took the phone and told me that he can’t take this order over the phone because of people not paying and abandoning orders. I let her know that i will be paying it upfront on the phone to secure it, she then continued with “we can’t do that because you could have a stolen card and we can’t verify it”. I was beyond shocked on her unprofessionalism. She then continue to cancel my order and telling me to order online only. I didn’t want to disappoint my team as they were so excited for this meal, so i ended up ordering online. When i got there, nothing was marked on which sandwich was which. The fries and fried pickles were all in one bag loose! Ms. Alley not once acknowledged or apologized for the inconvenience, in fact the young man that took my order came outside to apologize for the error for him not knowing that policy. I am so disturbed and shocked on the leadership Boxcar Betty have hired there that their first priority is to inconvenience the business they are getting during times like this vs appreciating the business they are getting. I hope someone teaches this young lady a value of positive reputation for a business and teach her how to be an effective leader that grows the business and not hurts the brand. My team and i were so disappointed that after all we gave them business, only to get by far the worst service and food that we will never go there again nor recommend...

The day I was here, I dined with a GIANT ROACH enjoying his meal near the drink/table area...and before anyone says, its just a Palmetto bug...even for a Palmetto bug, it was the healthiest and most overweight roach I have ever seen in my life. This may be due to the tasty eats found sticking to the bottoms of my shoes and unknown rubber cement substance on the floor!
My newfound friend, Jerry-P-Roachster, had a window seat in clear view of the restaurant patrons. As we ate, Jerry and I soon found ourselves reminiscing about the good old days, where the best sweet tea could be found and how much we both enjoyed people watching! He confessed to me, while we were enjoying our meal together, that he too loved the chicken sandwiches but the sweet potato fries were his favorite!
Employees? While waiting for me to place my order, the cashier was also found to be busy snacking on what I can only imagine was leftover chicken under her 9 inch nails. She greeted me with an attitude of inconvenience and was stand-off-ish, and appeared to be annoyed with my minimal questions about the menu. Who knows, maybe I was just disturbing her lunch located deep beneath the layer of skin-nails she had been chomping on prior to entering my order.
Overall... 9 out of 10, would not...
Read moreI almost knocked off a star for the parking situation, but then remembered that Boxcar has the best chicken sandwich I've ever eaten, so I kept the extra star. So I'll break it down below:
Parking - pretty terrible. The restaurant is right off of a major highway so it's already difficult to get in if you're coming from the opposite direction, but then most of the parking seems to be in the back and it's very tight to try and pull out of there. I ended up doing a three-point turn sort of maneuver, and I drive an easy to park car.
Food - amazing. Like I said, the food makes up for the parking situation! I've never had anything bad here - the chicken sandwiches are the best I've ever had, the fries are delicious, the fried pickles are delicious, and the sweet potato fries are pretty much dessert. While they don't have a very large menu, everything I've tried has been amazing and you do have the option to create your own sandwich (for one flat cost, except if you add a fried green tomato). My husband and I have to stop ourselves from going too often, since it's not exactly health food alley.
So, in short - the food is amazing and is definitely worth the difficult parking. Boxcar Betty's has definitely become the place we take out of town guests to show off our delicious...
