We stopped in here on our way out of Charleston after visiting for a wedding, and to say it was disappointing would be an understatement. We arrived around 11:45 a.m. and didn’t get the appetizer until almost 12:30. We were told multiple times the food would be “out shortly,” but it definitely was not short. We both ordered coffee, one regular black and one latte. The latte I ordered was overly frothy and poorly made, not what you’d expect for $6. The black coffee had lipstick on the cup when it came out! Our food arrived at different times, and who I assume was the manager awkwardly came over to explain they had someone new in the kitchen and thanked me for being understanding. The problem was, no one had actually asked how I felt about the experience. It felt like they were just dancing around the fact that things weren’t going well. When my food finally came, it wasn’t bad, but by that point I’d completely lost my appetite. They dropped it off and walked away without asking if I needed anything, which I did (napkins and ketchup). The overall vibe was off; even the bathroom had the lid up with pee in the toilet. To top it off, when the check came, I thought they’d comped part of the meal since it said $40. A few minutes later, our server came back saying he’d given us the wrong check and handed us ours… for $70. However, he just dropped it off and didn’t give us a chance to look it over before taking the card to run it. I served in restaurants for years, so I have a lot of empathy however, this was one of those experiences that leaves you stressed, still hungry, and honestly confused about what just happened. If you’ve ever walked out of a place thinking, “What even just happened?”, this...
Read moreWent here for Brunch. Very experienced, friendly, and attentive staff. This one of several branches in the Charleston area, the first opened in 2005 and it has been awarded many accolades across multiple platforms for its brunch.
It was busy, but not packed when we arrived around 10:00. There was a short line/wait when we left around 11:00.
Food was decent, we had “New Orleans Beignets” which were fried, served with powdered sugar and fresh preserves ($10), they will not look like what you’d traditionally see (see photo), and a purist might be disappointed.
We also had the Steak and Eggs, which included an 8oz butcher cut steak, (great cut) with two eggs prepared to your choice ($21), with toast and a choice of potatoes or grits… I recommend the potatoes, they were the best thing I had at this meal.
Finally, ordered the Blue Crab and Shrimp Low Country Omelette ($23)… pleased to see it was real crab meat and not imitation. It included pepper-jack cheese, sautéed mushrooms, green peppers, tomatoes. This also came with grits, which was the most disappointing part of the meal, especially since this restaurant is known for them. They were lumpy and dry.
The value for money is tough here as it is across the country, but particularly so in Charleston, at this time. Specifically, you receive a 3% service charge whether you use a credit card or not, often regardless of the swipe fee charged by the credit card company, at least that was the case here. Sales tax also varies, it was 10.9% here. If you don’t tip on tax, and are a middle-of-the-road tipper for good service (~18%), nearly a third of your bill are fees. We paid $84 for two...
Read moreWe walked into Toast of West Ashley and saw three available tables. I shared we wanted a table and not a booth. A family was asked to move to a booth. The hostess preceded to sit us at the table the family just moved from. I asked what was wrong with the empty table and the hostess shared that those tables were a different section and the waitress that is up next doesn't work that section. We sat down and placed our order. I mentioned I wanted toast with my oatmeal. The waitress said that would be a dollar more. I mentioned at the top under "Breakfast" it clearly states the breakfast come with one biscuit or one slice of toast. One slice of toast will cost me another dollar. Our food arrived cold. Butter would not melt on my husband's pancakes, his sausage patty was cold and my oatmeal was cold, thick as a dampened block of clay. I was asked when I ordered if I wanted everything on my oatmeal. I said everything but raisins. I was expecting to get a bowl of hot oatmeal with milk, butter, and bananas. I got half a banana and no milk. It took our waitress three (3) trips to bring me my 2 oz of milk. The coffee was bitter. I sent my oatmeal back to be warmed. They brought it back with warm water poured on top. The waitress constantly asked if we needed anything else and I shared we need butter for my husband's pancakes by now we need melted butter. I do not understand how a cook in the southern portion of the United States does not know how to cook oatmeal and keep the food warm enough to melt butter. The New York Times must have rated this place in '2005. Here it is 2019 and it is only worthy to be recommended to my...
