Wife and I stopped in for lunch on a Saturday. I was surprised that there weren't more people. There is a cozy atmosphere but a little dark. Server was friendly and service was prompt.
We shared the deviled egg flight. It was good, especially the smoked salmon egg. Wife thought they needed a sprinkle of salt. I would like to see a little jalapeno diced into the egg yolk on the jalapeno egg rather than just one slice on top.
We got the classic shepherd's pie pasty with mushroom gravy and the Irish seaside pasty with white gravy. Both were delicious, especially the shepherd's pie. The thyme and lamb flavors both shine in that one. I didn't ask but I suspect the mushrooms in the mushroom gravy are marinated in Guinness becausei got a hint of beer flavor there. I've heard that the pies aren't made in house. I don't know if that's true but, if it is, I didn't care. They were great and a frozen pasty at the international market is nearly the same price and not as good.
Even though we were full, the desserts intrigued us so, after flipping a coin, we got the chocolate cake with Irish whipped cream. The cake was dense and moist with a deep chocolate flavor. We liked the fact that it wasn't overly sweet like cake can be. Again, I didn't ask but I suspect there's Guinness in the cake as well.
Overall, a little pricy for the portions but the food was really good and the service friendly. We'll be...
Read moreHagy's is a strange addition to the struggling Charleston food scene. The food tends to be the highlight of the place. They have an assortment of pasties as their main dishes, all par-baked, alongside some interesting appetizers. They tend to be fairly good, but not extraordinary. The surprise of the bunch has to be their pepperoni roll, which I believe is the best in the entire city, and outclassed by only a few venues in the state. This modestly priced pepperoni roll is worth the visit alone, and after a long trip outside the country, I found my self here the next afternoon for a taste of home. The service here is nothing to complain about. The issue is the atmosphere. A dark and narrow front leads to cheaply put together set of decor in the interior. The tables are crowned with a fake rubber tile with a glass top that doesn't add to the atmosphere in the slightest. The bar is nice to sit at though. Parking is convenient, as there is a city parking garage less than a block away, and this location is only two short blocks away from major attractions on Capitol Street. The ownership needs to heavily invest in making the place more approachable and inviting, as I fear that this restaurant will not last long. Nowadays, I frequent the place just to get the pepperoni roll, and occasionally deviate to other items on the menu for variety. Go here for the pepperoni roll, and tolerate...
Read moreThis place had so much potential, it's a shame. Another place that'll be closed by the end of the year. Their pasties are frozen, their drink menu is tiny, and their appetizers just don't make any sense.
There is nothing in the atmosphere that's would tell you this was an Irish pub, apart from the name. I'm truly baffled who this is for? It's not for young folk, since there are no drink specials and the clientele were all older anyway. The food is bland, half of it was sold out, and the pasties which are supposed to be the star of the show are clearly frozen and reheated.
Why do you pay $8 for three HALVES of an egg for deviled eggs? Why is the beer cheddar with a pretzel a soup and not a dip? Why do they only have 3 options for meat-based pasties (and 2 of them were sold out).
My advice to the owners is to stop being cheap. Get a real chef and make your pasties in house from scratch. I refuse to believe these aren't frozen pies and if they are, you should fire your chef because they are terrible. Rethink your entire appetizer menu and their prices. Add some fries to the menu, ffs. Add drink specials that cater to younger folks, and advertise live bands and fun events. This place is...
