We were dog-sitting Soph, the dog-daughter of a friend of a friend of my parents. Soph eats sand and jumps on people and is very sweet when she is tired. We were also house-sitting for my grandma. A win-win, actually, because we could call the weekend a baby moon. At grandma's house, I found a bright orange cap, something to wear during hunting season so you don't get shot, or so the thinking goes. See, I am afraid of these things -- like fire/tornado/shooter drills -- because it seems like those things and those times are the things and times that make human hunting easier. That's all to say, I figured April was a fine time to don that orange hunting cap.

And there I sat, with puppy Soph, wearing that safety hat, waiting for my strawberry shake. Then a gentle-seeming older man came by and took a look at Soph (a Springer) and the hunting cap on my head and asked me just about what you'd expect: "You a hunter?"

And I blew it. Just blew it. Mumbled something. Sort of recovered. Said she was a hunter. Birds. And he smiled and walked off.

I was devastated, because the thing is that my grandpa (RIP) was a hunter, and for him being a hunter had something to do with being a man, and a man is what he wanted to make me. So I do know a bit about hunting birds. I know words like chukars, quails, and pheasants. I know some dogs are good for pointing, some for flushing, some for fetching. I know I don't like guns and killing, but people do both of them and it can be complicated, because some people who love animals also love killing them and somehow that is a form of respect.

If I could do it again, I would be someone who I am not. I would have told him Soph's a great hunter, that I run her and work her as much as work allows. That she's not gun shy and--I'd laugh and shake my head here--that she's really only interested in flushing but I'm still working on pointing. And I'd say that she's a good girl, and he would know what that meant, and that smile he walked off would have been a different kind of smile. The kind of smile that reflects the realization that there still are young people that are the person he was when he was their age. And that the...

Came after a long day at a mixer for a book series me and my wife enjoy. We ordered a 1/4lb cheeseburger with ketchup, mayo, and pickles a large fry and a chicken tender box. We didnt realize they were cash only so I had to run to my car. 2-3 minute round trip. My wife then informs me later that while I was gone the lady took the next person's order and told them I had to go get cash in a rude tone. But that's all fine until the next part. They didnt start cooking my food for 12-18 minutes. They waited until they had no more people ordering even though the one who took my order wasn't even taking orders anymore she was stocking random stuff. Then when the line was gone she goes and starts cooking. Just to cook a burger for someone who order 15 minutes after I had. When I eventually got my food it had been almost 30 minutes from the time I ordered. If you are skeptical on how I knew they didnt start cooking until the line was gone. There were 4 girls working and I seen them the entire time and never did one step behind the island to cook until the line was gone. Even when some had nothing to do. And I then smelled the food cooking as well. Just to serve someone who ordered way after me first. I paid $21.50 and gave a $3.50 tip (before I knew about the rude comment). Just to be targeted and wait 30 minutes for a burger fries and some tenders. Way overpriced staff is rude and gives people dirty looks and clearly dont care about the customers. I will never come here again. It seems like unless you only order ice cream then you are just a hassle to...

First, they are cash only. This wouldn't be a problem, except that their sign isn't the typical, "cash only" sign. It looks like a normal credit card sign, except that there's a red crossed out circle and "we do not accept debit or credit cards" written under it. This was very confusing at first glance when looking at the menu for the first time.

Second, they have menus with what I assume are old prices on the side of the building. I was expecting to pay $6 for two ice cream cones, but was floored when the price came out to over $13!

Thirdly, they messed up both of our cones. My daughter ordered something with sprinkles and I jokingly asked for them to hold the sprinkles on mine. Whelp, I got sprinkles and my daughter got the wrong flavor of ice cream.

Lastly, they were a little rude and impatient feeling. I understand and appreciate that I should've read things better and been more attentive, but I hate feeling like I'm being an inconvenience to them on my first visit to a new place.

The only reason why I'm giving 2 stars instead of 1 is because the ice cream is really good. All in all, I can't recommend against coming here. Just be sure to read everything twice and double...

Edit from a five star review to a two star review. Last time we ate at Dairy Grill, I bit down into something hard in my black bean burger and cracked one of my bottom right molars. I had to have an emergency filling done on it in Petoskey and will have to have a crown put on it when we get back home to Texas. I called and spoke to Terry, the owner about it. This is going to cost me close to $2,000 to get my tooth completely fixed. Terry didn’t really seem to care. At first I wanted him to check with his insurance to see if he would be able to help me out, then I texted him back and said that I had changed my mind and that I would take care of the cost myself. Terry never responded. This has been a huge ordeal for me. I’ve never had any teeth issues other than a cavity or two over the years. We loved eating here and I am so sad that we won’t be eating here anymore. I love the black bean burger and my hubby loves the half pound burger. We also enjoy the onion rings, cheese curds and of course Ashby’s ice cream. Everything is always fresh and delicious and we always eat here when we are visiting all the way from Texas!

All around a great outdoor fried food and ice cream joint! Burgers were satisfying (the bacon is worth the extra 💵 😋) and the ice cream was good quality! The cheese curds exceeded expectations and the fried pickles were good too. NOTE that this place is CASH ONLY. Overall pretty fast and good customer service, although a guy who came out back to clean part of the outdoor space (seemed like he could be the manager/owner) had a pretty rough attitude. Thought he was joking with us about a previous family’s mess but we realized he was real angry. Everyone has tough days, but sometimes those situations that aren’t a big deal make you wonder if he’ll say something to the next group about your family 🙃. Anyway, great spot!
