My favorite restaurant in the world - literally. I have been coming here for years and even with the extensive dining venue that Charlotte has I am unable to find a place I'd rather relax and eat at. This place is the very definition of "soul food". The jerk chicken here is out of this world. The sauce is home made and is a "wet" sauce instead of the "dry rub" style sauce found in many recipes. It is usually spicy enough to make my eyes water. I always ask for extra sauce which I mix in with the rice and cabbage. The large plates are heaped with enough food for two meals. I've had jerk chicken in Jamaica, the Bahamas, the British Virgin Islands, Miami, on beaches, in cinderblock construction bars in the Islands, you name it, and I've never found food that satisfies me like Caribbean Hut in North Carolina (of all places). I have chosen Caribbean Hut over a three course meal in Dilworth before. Caribbean Hut will be what I miss most when I have to leave Charlotte one day, and I know my way around.
With that said, the location is in a bad part of town, and I have seen a lot of very rude and entitled people come in to this restaurant and demand service and whine about small things and then leave little to absolutely no tip. I tip very generously and have ALWAYS been taken care of, no matter what my request. I bring family and friends here all the time to share my experience. Sometimes I ask for a sample of ox tail or curry so that my guests can taste the food before ordering it and I've never been charged for samples or felt like I've been looked over in any way. In fact, most of the staff is so friendly that I'm on a first name basis. Read the other reviews with a grain of salt. Come try it for yourself and make an opinion.
If given one last day on earth, I'd take; my family, a beautiful windy-sunny day, a bottle of Johnny Walker Red Label, and...
Read moreIf you know/understand what REAL Caribbean, Jamaican, Hatian, Island food is suppose to taste like, bypass this place. Let me say that the food IS doable if your hungry and need to tease your taste buds with some Island flavor.
Overall the food is bland. What I mean by that- the meat for example is top/outside seasoned. When you chew into your food, there is no seasoning. I guess down here in NC, spots like this don't believe in marinating their meat and adding a little love while slow cooking. You can yell that the food was rushed.
Here is what my we had: Chicken Patty was dry and the crust EXTRA crispy (almost burnt) Beef Patty was excellant Cocobread was good. A little on the dry side but good Oxtails were fatty and taste was bland. The gravy was good!!! Mac and cheese was DRY but had an okay kick to it There was NO CABBAGE.... like really, what Island spot doesn'thave cabbage but collard greens???? smh Plantains dry, Dry, DRY!!!! No moisture, just Sahara Desert dry Rice and peas dry, dry...... Curry Chicken I mean, bolied chicken with sprinkled curry powder. The gravy was watery Now the potatoes in the currry chicken were EXCELLENT! Bottled Ting was AMAZING!!!! 😁😁😁😁 Homemade Sorrell was EXCELLENT
The service is the real cause for the low stars..... The guys serving the food were nice. They can add a little more friendliness to them. Now that lady waiter..... RUDE!!!!!!! From her rolling her eyes when answering your question all the way to us having to go back to the line to retrieve our change from the counter because she was chilling while talking to another employee.
All in all..... NEVER AGAIN!!! Well maybe for a beef patty, ting and sorrel.
I hope this rating helps...
Read moreI have never experience such horrible service in my life. Me and my husband arrived to the restaurant there were 3 tables that were dirty and a couple waiting for change who also expressed how we could have their table since they were about to leave. So, the rude server had a two seater table in the middle of the front flow of traffic of people placing Togo orders and started "tall are gonna have to sit here" I stated I don't mind waiting for another table. So, she proceed to not purposely clean the tables, then finally a man appeared from the back and only picked up the plates and then another lady came from behind the counter to pick up the cups. We sat down and the man who sales DVDs went to spray and clean the empty table, where we had to ask him to clean our table. The server then continuously walked pass not acknowledging us at all. I was fed up at this point where I went to the line to place my order at the counter and the server who finally then notice that I'm at the counter to place my order yells across the restaurant "Don't fix anything" mind you at this moment I'm the only one at the counter. I was so disgusted and disappointed in the service. I will NEVER EAT THERE AGAIN! Tropical Goodies, Irie Vibes and Island Groceries have better food,...
