I drive past Lady Marmalade daily but had never been able to stop in while they were open. Recently one Saturday I was passing by and decided to make the turn into the parking lot and try it out. I was really surprised to see that the inside was impeccably designed and styled and the edible treats followed suit beautifully!
Just on styling alone this is a shop you would expect to see in trendy DC, LA, or NYC....not saying down town Great Bridge isn't a bustling metropolitan center, but it's décor was modern, tasteful and really buttoned up.
Speaking of Tasteful, the bakery treats did not disappoint. You step in can almost feel yourself transported to the bakers' tent from great British Bake-Off. The sights are colorful, the reception from the staff is warm and welcoming and smell really cannot be beat, there is good reason candles and scented waxes make cookie/brownie scented items!
The first thing that catches your eye would likely be the cooler/display case of colorful macaroons. Large ones, small ones, neatly aligned in rows waiting for you to select based on simply color or flavor to those with a more discerning palate! Onward from the colorful case is the counter with unique treats but not an overwhelming variety so the visitor can confidently ask about eat, consider their choices and take just about 'one of everything'.
On my visit I ended up with a whole host of options nicely boxed up from the staff, confident I couldn't go wrong and empowered that I was educated on the selection to get a few Gluten-free choices for my Wife I was very pleased with the following; GF Rice Krispie, Lemon Blueberry Scone, Oatmeal cream pie, Peach Crumble Bar, and Caramel Cornflake Brownie. They were all great but in my mind the Oatmeal cream pie was a simple classic done well and closely followed by the caramel cornflake brownie which was a nice update to the traditional brownie which was well executed as the base of the cornflake topping.
100% recommend stopping by on a Saturday they are open! Hopefully they will find it worth while to possibly open additional days/hours but totally understand the time and effort poured into each precise baked good on display is not an easy feat.
TL;DR 10 out of 10 would and have recommend this place. Go try it, find a new favorite or well baked classic and grab some for a friend to share the love. Gluten-free options and over all chef's...
Read moreWhen I say this little hole in the wall carries some of the best baked goods to ever grace my tastebuds, I could not over exaggerate even if I wanted to. First off, everything in there is gorgeous. My hubby and I got the macarons: Passion Fruit -delightfully balanced with tangy and sweet-, Lady Grey -sweet and wonderful mild flavor-, Pistachio -delicious-, Almond -gorgeous gold brushed with a full almond flavor that I just cannot get enough of-, Espresso -full body coffee flavor that my husband absolutely loved-, and Chocolate -literally chocolate ice cream in a macaron, no idea how they did that but amazing!-. Second off, their lemon shortbread cookie was perfectly sweet and bright with lemon citrus flavor and not to mention the perfect texture with a soft middle and crumbly edges -YES-. Third off, their brown butter chocolate chip cookies are HUGE and SO FREAKING GOOD, an indulgence in every sense of the word, topped with flaky salt. And last but certainly the best, in my humble opinion, the Cherry Bakewell Tart. Oh. My. Word. This is an absolute MUST TRY if you visit this incredible place. It is the perfect pastry in every way. Crumbly, creamy, sweet, almond flavored tart with a delectable cherry filling, decorated with a perfectly thick gorgeous white icing and maraschino cherry on top. I don’t know how they did it but the cherry filling tastes like a BETTER version of maraschino cherries and the whole thing is an experience I will be reliving EVERY time I go. (Next time I’ll post pictures...
Read moreAmongst the myriad local shops in the Great Bridge area, none are as distinct as House of Marmalade. Although nigh imperceptible to the traveler's eye, it is inescapable to their nose. Patrons are greeted with the delectable and buttery aroma of a British bakery. Through the display stands a regiment of delicately crafted pastries. The eyes know the flavors through the brightly colored frostings and fruits, respectively, layered and embedded into the crust of each tartlet, cookie, cupcake, and scone. There is an apparent labor of love for the yield from this gem of modest Great Bridge. I would implore anyone near and passing through to pencil in a time to visit The House of Marmalade and acquire one of these delicacies, all for an affordable price. For those who are fans of the popular TV show The Great British Baking Show, this will undoubtedly garner your appreciation for the level of care and craftsmanship to concoct such edible works of art. My suggestion: rise with the Saturday morn, grab your favorite blend of black tea, swing on by House of Marmalade, and enjoy your very own slice of fine British...
