Skrimp Shack — Restaurant in Chesapeake

First, I would give this place a 2.5, maybe a 3 however, feel that overall, the food, under delivered.

Second, we've dined here several times, this being our 4th time.

We ordered the tilapia (grilled) taco plate, the Skrimp Po'Boy, and the Skrimp Po'Boy with crab meat.

Additionally, we ordered a box of fries (it's really just a styrofoam to go tray) and the hush puppies.

While the food isn't bad, it isn't anything to write home about.

The best dish of the 4 items we ordered was the "Skrimp Dinner". It was well seasoned and that was about it. The shrimp alone stand on their own-well cooked and seasoned just right. The portion of fries that came with the order was dismal, and inconsistent with previous visits.

The Tilapia Tacos (grilled) had an overall decent flavor profile only, the fish seemed to get lost, figuratively and literally; 3 very skimpy, and what seemed to be stiff end pieces were buried at the bottom of the rest of the taco make up...again, inconsistent portion control. In previous visits we've got actual prices with some tooth and bite to them.

The Po'Boys....what can I say...I initially thought they had forgot to put them in the bag but noticed they were at the bottom of the sauces, and napkins...both of them. They are on the small side, and use what seem to be micro shrimp, commensurate with the small size of the hoagie bun they come in. Again, the flavor profile of the shrimp was pretty good...only drowned by the rest of the contents of the sandwich. The Po'Boy with the crab meat in it was consistently disappointing. Rather than as advertised (on top) it seemed to be tossed with the shrimp, almost seeming like a chicken salad, only with shrimp and crab meat. There was what seems to be consistent with crab meat, disbursed amongst the shrimp and the other contents that come with the sandwich. I expected the crab meat to have its own profile, and sadly, this was a consistency (with previous visits) that I could have done without, and wAs hoping wasn't the case this time.

The hushpuppies...I'll say this much; I'll stick to make them myself from scratch and will digress.

Again, overall, not too bad; definitely not worth the price (approx $60), especially this go around.

The staff is courteous enough, and the place genuinely seems to be a "cool place" to grab a bite, just don't have any real expectations.

We may consider revisiting - but that's a stretch after the several visits already made, we have gave it a fair shake.

One recommendation would be to take a hard look at consistency, and portion control...and if shrimp is the draw ("Skrimp") then I would also recommend they use the same size shrimp used in the "Skrimp Dinner"; while perhaps less shrimps in the sandwich, I'd much more appreciate that, from a visual stand point, but I'd also pay a bit more for the bite and feel of the bigger shrimp.

Other than...

We’ve been several times and both food and service is great every time. Tonight though, made me feel like I needed to write a review. After getting home with my order, I thought that one of the meals was made with the wrong side. I drove back to the store and started to calmly explain what I was bringing back, but looked at my receipt while I was explaining and realized that the order was indeed prepared exactly as I had pressed on the screen (I.e. the error was on my part). So I immediately apologized and was ready to go ahead and order the actual side that I needed, but within a split second of me finishing apologizing, T told me to not worry about it and he would get me the side we needed. I’m still in shock by how quickly he responded and his choice to take the initiative to do something I didn’t even ask for or expect at all. T’s choice to react this way, care about me as a customer (I’m sure I looked a little down about it) and turn it into an incredibly positive experience will probably result in far more revenue and overall business than the cost of the extra side. *This location FAMILY OWNED AND OPERATED * Before I rated this location I read several of the 1 and 2 star reviews, and I can tell you that those reviews are far from my experience. I have visited many of the shrimp shack locations and this is by far the best one I have visited. (I will not return to the Norfolk location) The call in order was exceptional, everything was done to a T and you could tell that the person that answered the phone was interested and ready to serve you. Their location was clean neat modern well lit, and did I say CLEAN! The counters where you walk up to were clean well lit and I was greeted twice before I could even make it to the counter. My food was ready WHEN I ARRIVED. 6 MINUTES after the call. 5.The portion was overwhelming, hot, season correctly, cooked thoroughly, and tasted great. I am not a small guy so paying out money for a lunch sandwich I can tell you that the portion size was enough to fill me up! This is my go to location!
