I ordered the apple fritter, the blackberry beignet, blueberry pancake, boston cream, vanilla cronut, and the apple cider donut.
Off the bat, the boston cream pie surprised me because it looks like a regular cinnamon coated chocolate donut, but when you cut into it, the filling is in that ring shape, just like their blueberry pancake donuts. It is yummy, but a little chocolatey for my taste this morning, as the top is like a ganache. My favorite was the apple cider donut because the crumb is so wonderfully moist and soft (I am partial to cake donuts, especially apple cider!). Second favorite was the blackberry beignet because the filling had a tartness that balanced out the sweetness. The vanilla cronut was ok, but not as crunchy as I thought it would be. However, I got it in the late morning and they probably make these at 4 am or something- it’s obviously a high quality item regardless. The apple fritter was good, but I’m realizing I don’t usually like them compared to other donuts.
I think if I had a visitor from out of town and they only wanted to get one donut, I’d recommend the blueberry pancake or the blueberry beignet for the unique experience, but I’d get the apple cider and have them have a bite of mine. Right now it’s my top recommendation for donuts in the city. The woman at the cash register was super friendly and I love the idea of supporting a small, local business.
Fyi, they said they’re in a few coffee shops around the city and at the Wicker Park farmers...
