An avid theater-goer, this is one of my favorite stomping grounds. And I'm literally about an hour away. Still, so worth the trip. They consistently bring to life the most thought-provoking, if not entertaining, productions. The scripts (and they are diverse, rich & unfailing discerning about putting on the work of the FINEST & complex playwrights, both new & old) are compelling, colorful narratives---thankfully, placed into the hands of some of the top actors in our fine city, so nary do they have a miss. I can't wait to continue to see what they do next. And yes, sadly, I will once again sit in HORRIBLE traffic to get there, just the cost of heading to the North side of the city where, fortunately, MAGIC awaits me. Yes, often enough it's such a hassle to get around to the north side of the city from the south 'suburbs that I get distressed on the drives.... but afterward, there's never any residual thought in my mind that it might not be worth it. Just know... of course it is! Open yourself up, make that effort (if FAR like me), you will not be disappointed. oh and Yes, culture matters! I tell everyone as often as I can & it's true (probably coining Chris Jones!).....Chicago literally has the BEST small storefront theater scene than in all the country (well OK....this isn't "storefront" but be very aware, those are often hidden gems, as well). Don't miss out!! Your mind can & is often transformed by GREAT theater if you allow yourself to experience it...
Read moreThere are two theaters in the building, one upstairs and one downstairs, which is the larger of the two. There isn't a bad seat in either of them. Downstairs there is a gift store that sells books and play- related items, the Front Bar, where beverages and a limited food menu are available, and a coffee counter. Segregated and unisex bathrooms are offered. The upstairs is smaller and more intimate, with a counter/bar that offers offers hot and cold beverages and snacks. Beverages may be taken into the theaters. The Steppenwolf Theater offers world-class plays and actors, many of whom are internationally known from theater, television, and movies. This is not "Broadway in Chicago", but offers contemporary and classic plays that are complex, thought-provoking, and beautifully staged and performed. Go to the Steppenwolf to be challenged. Many nights post play discussions are held to let the intelligent and thoughtful audience work through and express their insights into, and questions about, the material covered...
Read moreI attended MS. BLAKK FOR PRESIDENT by Tina Landau and Tarell Alvin McCraney. It was amazing.
The show was amazing. Each performer found a unique way to keep the audience entertained. The stage was set up as more of a runway show. I can't imagine any seat in the house being a bad one. You'll laugh and cry during this performance. Mostly laugh. You'll also learn a part of LGBTQ history.
About the theater. This place is ran like a well oiled machine. Theater ushers are mic'ed and making sure that every patron is getting to their show. We were a bit slow, so they messaged our theater to let them know we were on our way. Some of the restrooms are gender neutral, so don't be surprised if you have the opposite sex in the bathroom with you. There are also male and female designated bathrooms for those that aren't up for the experience.
You've got every kind of drink option, from specialty coffees to anything with alcohol.
You'll have a great time.
