I was visiting Chicago for the weekend with my brother and we wanted to get some breakfast. First we tried a pancake place, but the Saturday morning wait was 1-1/2 to 2 hours so we went somewhere else, which ended up being the Pittsfield Cafe. It was a great choice!
We waited in line for maybe 10 minutes. The restaurant is located in a large building with a huge lobby, so we got to feel fancy like we were in the 1920s eating a posh breakfast in a hotel lobby (the cafe isn't in a hotel though, just to be clear).
The wait service was prompt, which is always a plus in my book. Our waitress came to our table after a couple minutes, so we had enough time to decide on drinks. I got a fresh squeezed orange juice and a coffee. My brother got orange juice as well and a cappuccino. The juice was amazing! My coffee was great, too. Not at all bitter but it still tasted like coffee.
For out meal, we both got eggs Benedict. So delicious! The meal came with hash browns, too, that were cooked at just the right crispy level for my taste.
If you need to use the facilities while you're there, you need to get a key from the counter or ask your server for the key to use the public restroom downstairs. The bathroom was clean and tidy. All the dispensers were full.
The prices were reasonable for the quality of food, drink, and service. It'll seem pricey if you're visiting from a suburb, but that's just the way cities are, so bear...
Read moreCame here on Memorial Day. We went here based on the great ratings this place has received. The food was fine but unfortunately we were disappointed with the service. We asked the server to give us a couple of minutes to decide what we wanted to order. She gave us way too much time where I had to tell another server that we were ready to order. This server looked at me and pretty much said she didn't have us and walked right past our server without saying anything to her. I had to get up and tell our waitress that we were ready. She said ok and still went off to do other things. I would understand if it was a busy time but there weren't a lot of guests and it was about 30 minutes to close. She finally came back and took our order. She gave us our food and disappeared again. We didn't even have any silverware so I had to go explore and find some myself. Not once did she ask if we needed anything or check back on us. The only time we saw her again was when she dropped off our bill. She didn't even come back for the bill! We were seated outside of the Cafe and I could see her through the window sitting in a booth and chatting it up with her coworkers. I understand you're nearing the end of your shift but don't be lax with the guests you still have. At no point did I give off any attitude so I'm assuming her actions were out of laziness. First and last time...
Read moreAdmittedly, all three times i've come here have been within 15-20 minutes of opening in the morning, as that's when i get off of work at the end of my shift. The first time i came in, i got the chef's skillet, which had each of the 3 meats individually tucked away in pockets in the corners at the bottom of the skillet; that one, i can write off as the kitchen still warming up near-opening. The second time i ordered the carne asada with eggs off of the early bird menu, which it lists as being a marinated skirt or ribeye steak with 2 eggs, hashbrowns and roasted onions. The plate i received was some very good eggs and some hashbrowns with very tasty buttery pockets here and there, but an unseasoned, unmarinated skirt steak with grilled onions. The third time was the lorraine potato pancakes, which the early bird menu lists as being 3 pancakes with chives, bacon, swiss cheese and creme fraiche. The plate i received was 8-9 crispy hashbrown medallions with no swiss, 2 strips of bacon, a cup of sour cream with onions and cucumber in it, and a salad of iceberg lettuce, cucumber, bell peppers and cherry tomatoes that took up the remainder of the plate. The service was prompt and polite all three times, but there's really no getting around two plates not matching the listings on the menu despite being accurately listed...
