NOT SAFE FROM THEFT. It disappoints me to even write this review but I think it's important to make other potential patrons aware that this restaurant is not protecting their customers.

On Saturday night I was at this Sushi San location dining with my partner and while I was in the bathroom, two suspicious individuals wearing masks and hoods came INTO THE RESTAURANT and started harassing patrons for money while using threatening intimidation tactics. While I was in the bathroom, one of them sat across from partner at the table while management did nothing but politely ask the intruder to leave.

While the suspect was arguing with the manager and threatening my partner for no reason, he sneakily reached into my fanny pack on the bench seat and removed my wallet. After returning from the bathroom and having no idea what just occurred, I realized my wallet was missing and fraudulent charges started appearing from stores down the street within minutes.

Only AFTER the incident took place did a restaurant "security guard" suddenly appear in the front of the establishment. According to my partner and the tables around us, the two who committed the crime were wandering and harassing patrons for FAR too long and no one took any action other than kindly asking them to leave. They were not searched before leaving and were able to make their way out of the building without any confrontation from management or the missing security guard.

What made matters even worse is that both management AND the security guard admitted to us that it has happened before. It's extremely disappointing to know other that patrons have faced theft while dining INSIDE this restaurant but the management has yet to do anything to prevent it. Security appearing after the incident took place was the most upsetting, knowing that this could've most likely been prevented and my entire wallet with a license, credit and debit cards, and personal information would not be gone.

I appreciate the restaurant comping the meal, but it's the absolute least they could've done considering it was a situation that should have NEVER taken place while dining INSIDE...

Sushi and other Japanese staples have become so ubiquitous that unless one possesses the BM palate of a catfish (that has up to 175,000 taste buds) is hard to discern the difference between offerings from Tokyo to NYC). The only edge a chef has is in the freshness of the fish, and its variety. Sushi-san claims their fresh fish is flown in daily from Japan a claim that is hard to substantiate on flavor alone. Cooking Japanese food follows a rigid pattern, like performing a classical score. The freshest the ingredients the better the result. It allows for no creative input, which can only be displayed in the presentation, the serve-ware and the service. I had no chance to take pics given that I had landed in Chicago an hour before.

Service was efficient, the food was fresh but on the 5 pc maki, in which I chose to skip the rice and replace it with cucumber, I found the cucumber strips where cut too thick, and were so hydrated that they overpowered the taste of the bluefin tuna. In addition my attention shifted from enjoying the tuna, to trying not to choke while attempting to chew such thick slabs of cucumber.

The last pet peeve is that they accept no cash, credit cards only, a sentence which is buried in the menu. If I had been warned by the waitress, orally, that this was their policy I would have walked out. Is this legal anyway?

They accepted my cash after a tussle, but only later did I noticed that I had been charged an additional 3.50% surcharge to offset the credit card company fees. So I paid cash, and on top of that the c.c. surcharge. And I left 20% tip which made me feel like I had...

If you're a fan of sushi, Sushi-San is an absolute must-visit gem in the heart of the Chicago. From the moment you walk through the door, you're greeted by an atmosphere that makes you feel welcome while being hip at the same time.

The menu at Sushi San is a masterclass in creativity and freshness. Their sushi is an exquisite blend of traditional and innovative styles, with each piece crafted to perfection. The fish, sourced daily, is incredibly fresh, and you can taste the difference in every bite. Whether it's the melt-in-your-mouth lobster kimchi rice or one of their many delicious rolls it all taste like heaven.

One of the standout items is the omakase—a chef's tasting menu that takes you on a journey of flavors. It’s not just a meal; it’s an experience. The chef's skillful use of seasonings, garnishes, and plating makes each course feel like a work of art. The variety of textures and flavors is enough to make any sushi lover swoon.

The service is impeccable. The staff are friendly, knowledgeable, and more than happy to help you make a decision. Our server Minnie was sweet and highly knowledgeable on any questions we had. The GM Asuka came to the table to make sure we were enjoying ourselves and was an absolute angel. Even the bartender Adrain came to tell us more about or cocktail selections.

Sushi-San is everything you want in a sushi restaurant—fresh, flavorful, and full of surprises. Whether you’re a sushi connoisseur or a newcomer, it’s an experience you won’t soon forget. Highly...
