Tldr: Getting to the show was a confusing experience. The show (Baby Wants Candy) was fun and funny! Roots, the pizza place was delicious after the show.
Note: not all theatres offer a full dinner menu with the show! Doors don't open until about 5 min before the show!
This was my first time at second city and I had read through the FAQs on the website. They all indicated that you could have dinner with the show. When we reached the venue, the attendants quickly ushered is up to the skybox theatre, where a large crowd was waiting around and a small concessions stand was open. With 15 minutes till showtime, we expected to be seated immediately, with time to order, and there were no clear indications that doors hadn't yet opened. Everyone we asked was confused and unsure. After some waiting around we were finally told we had about 10 minutes until doors opened.
Confused, we proceeded back down to the three restaurants the venue boasts-- one was closed, and the other two were clearly sit down places. Upon asking the attendant if there was dinner we could take into the theatre, he was taken aback as if we were being completely ridiculous!! He mentioned the concessions stand was all they had. We made do with concessions at the show, and got dinner at Roots afterwards!
I understand now that not all theatres offer dinner with the show but I would expect the attendant to understand why we were expecting more food than the concessions stand, and explain not all theatres have a full dinner menu!
Additionally, the doors didn't open until 5 before the show, which isn't an issue but it would be helpful if there were signs or attendants up there, like there were in the rest of the building! Seemed bizarre the attendants just repeated what was on the signage, but weren't there when there...
Read moreDisappointing Valentine's Day Special by The Second City Our group of four attended "The Best of The Second City" Valentine's Day special at the MAC on COD's campus. The show was advertised as “taking humorous shots at heartbreak, missed connections, and the complexities of human relationships.” We were excited, expecting a fun evening filled with laughter about the ups and downs of relationships. Unfortunately, we were sorely disappointed to the point that we walked out of the production. The show had very little to do with love, heartbreak, connections, or relationships. From the opening set, the performers missed their mark. They failed to recognize their audience and what would resonate with them. The only humorous part of the show was when they asked for the couple who had been together the longest. This interaction, involving a couple who had been together for 57 years, provided the funniest moment of the night, along with the skit that followed mimicking them. However, after a few more sets and an inappropriate personal song by the curly-haired performer, we had enough. The performers took political shots at our current leaders that were a bit too graphic. They seemed to focus more on their personal agendas and political views than finding humor in love and relationships. It was so bad that we walked out of the show. If I want to be bombarded with politics, I'll turn on the TV. But to pay for a comedy show that wasn’t very funny is unacceptable. This will be the last Second City show I ever waste my money and time on. All thumbs down....wish I could...
Read moreRecently we took in a late afternoon Comedy Show of Fast, Loud and Funny which is located on the 2nd floor at Second City. It was not the main theater but, we felt the performance was only "OK". The cast was comprised of 3 men and 3 women. There was one performer who really out performed his fellow cast members, I believe his name was Ajay? Seating at the Theater is assigned upon your arrival, the earlier you get there, the closer to the stage your seats are. We arrived about 10 minutes before the performance and the host sat us on the far, right side of the stage, clustered close to other guests. The tables are tightly packed along with the chairs, Since the show was at only 25% capacity there were plenty of tables available in the middle of the room. We asked to be moved and they said "no problem". I think the other guests were grateful that we moved, cause we are a TALL family. We've been attending shows at Second City since the mid 1980's. They used to have a 2 drink minimum along with the purchase of a ticket. Not sure but, at this show there was no drink minimum. Which was good, cause the drink prices are a little $$. I know it's Chicago but, they were offering a 20 ounce drink for $29! But, you get to keep the glass. One note of advice: The men should either polish or purchase new shoes. The Audience sits lower than the stage and our eyes focus on scuffed, worn shoes. My mom gave me good advice when I was young: "To make a good impression in the world, always make sure you're shoes look nice and polished". To this day I follow it, cause...
