We had high hopes for this place based on recommendations, unfortunately it didn’t live up to them, not even close. It was a busier night but for a place where the plates are $25-30 each, I do at least expect proper service.
They warned us that they were running slow when we arrived but slow is an understatement. First we had reservations, made well in advance, which we called and confirmed before arriving. When we arrived they didn’t have proper tables set up for our two parties, total of 10 of us. They offered us bar seating or outdoor patio when it’s cold out no one else is on the patio. We had RESERVATIONS so how is there not tables set aside for us? Isn’t that the point of a reservation?
Then, multiple items we ordered were not available anymore because they ran out of supplies. It’s a Friday night on a known graduation weekend in the area.. why didn’t they order enough supplies? We still didn’t complain though. Trying to be understanding and kind to be honest, but instead of being obliging and maybe being apologetic, they just got worse and worse.
Our reservations were for 8PM. The service was not good and it was slower than slow. We didn’t get our food until 9:45!! And then it honestly wasn’t well flavored. It was just ok. I got the NY Walleye, it wasn’t bad but wasn’t great by far. I had to add salt and pepper to it. No ones food at the table was impressive. It was just alright. However again for $25-$30 a plate and it having a culinary academy and reputation, we expected it to be amazing. It wasn’t even good. It was just ok even though it took forever to serve us. Even my drink, I ordered a virgin mojito, simple drink I’ve ordered in many places for years, I got seltzer with some mint leaves.
The part that just made it ridiculous was that, as slow as the service was, there was no corresponding attitude of professional care or concern. It was as if we were bothering them with our business. Although we were the only people of color in the place, I want to believe that wasn’t the reason why. It was just that in addition to the slow service we were treated with SUCH disregard that it did feel slightly prejudicial. We are all professionals in the area for our children’s university graduation. We had to ask for our check, which was then incorrect, then we had to wait again for the corrected check... then we had to wait again for them to come get it with our credit card.
Throughout the entire evening, no one on the staff seamed to care at all, they see us looking for servers but rather than acknowledge they just act like they don’t see us because they clearly do not care and even seem to resent our presence, there is not proper tableware we ended up sharing freaking forks! No salt, no pepper I had to get up and ask for some from the bar, no one came to clear the appetizer plates, so we are eating our gourmet food we waited forever for with bread scraps and dirty empty appetizer trays in front of us. It’s not like they didn’t have the time.. we were sitting forever! We still didn’t complain. We are saying thank you to them being OVERLY courteous and they didn’t ONCE say it to us. Not. One. time. We still tipped our server well. Not one thank you.
The list of bad service goes on and on. After all of that, they never even asked us if we wanted dessert or coffee, etc. they just brought us the incorrect check as if to say “we just want you to leave”
It is clear that this place was not properly prepared to have a great night of business and their standard of customer service is WAY below their price point. Spending $300 in place doesn’t even get you a “thank you for coming” not sure if that’s only for darker complexions or for everyone. Disappointing is an understatement.
So many good restaurants to choose from who appreciate paying patrons, ALL paying patrons. This isn’t one of them. Definitely do NOT...
Read moreIncredible food in a beautiful setting!!! I dined at the NY Kitchen Cafe on Wednesday night with my brother and sister in law. First off, I would like to point out how incredibly safe we felt dining here. It was all of our first times dining out since the COVID-19 outbreak, we all shared how incredibly thoughtful and tactful it appears they planned steps of service around the health and safety of patrons and staff! As you walk up to the beautiful outdoor bar to place your orders, all staff wore masks, gloves, and were behind a plexiglass shield, which I thought was incredibly thoughtful to have for the bartenders behind them. After ordering, you are given a numbered tag and are welcomed to seat yourselves wherever you'd like, either in the lush colorful garden, upstairs for for an incredible lake view, or under their spacious tent if you wanted to be out of the sun (or rain). All of the tables were spaced far apart, so it was easy to stay away from other families and friends dining. All plates and cutlery were made of high quality compostable materials we were told, made for single use to also reduce any potential spread of the virus. Before we knew it our food runner, Zach, delivered us with one of the best meals I have had in months!!! The ceviche was to die for. We also shared the buffalo cauliflower bites, chips and guacamole, sausage and mushroom pizza, and a beet salad. All of these dishes were executed flawlessly and plated beautifully. Perhaps the highlight of our experience (though it's hard to chose) were our desserts! The lemon drop and the BBC campfire. I wish that I had taken pictures of these incredibly unique and impressive desserts, but we could resist digging in! Both were not only some of the most visually pleasing desserts I have ever seen, but some of the tastiest, you cannot skip the desserts, you've really gotta see for yourself!! The staff was incredibly friendly and attentive, even though it was not your traditional full service dining experience, we enjoyed the casual setting centered around our safety. The outdoor space was kept clean, properly sanitized... the NYK cafe is a great way to enjoy a casual yet upscale dining experience right on beautiful Canandaigua lake. We cannot wait...
Read moreMy husband and I had a gift card and went to NY Kitchen restaurant for dinner on our anniversary. It was Labor Day weekend and we weren’t in any hurry and knew it might be busy. We were able to be seated right away. There was a very large party of a younger crowd celebrating a birthday. This was no fault of the restaurant, but it was on the loud side. There were fresh flowers on the table which was a nice touch. We were seated at a table with a nice view. It took a little longer than average to get our drinks. Again, we were not in a hurry and we were understanding of the wait. We ordered charcuterie as a starter. It was good and there were plenty of options for the 2 of us. It felt a bit underwhelming and not as high quality of meat and cheese for the price. The best thing on the board was the candied pecans. The cheese options were simple, summer sausage was one of the meat choices, and the sausage was on the bland side. We also ordered white chicken bacon pizza and Buffalo cauliflower. The pizza crust looked overly stretched out, brown along edging and undercooked on the bottom. It needed to cook maybe 1 minute more. The pizza itself was underseasoned and bland. Now, the white chicken bacon pizza has a lot of ingredients and usually on their own would be quite tasty. There was no flavor to the pizza. I’m not sure if it was an off night or if something was missing. The chicken on its own did not taste like anything. No salt, pepper. The caramelized onions were light in color and not flavorful, the mushrooms were thickly chopped. I was very hungry that evening since I did not eat much that day, so the first slice of pizza went down quick. It was definitely good. But it wasn’t very good. The second piece I was able to notice the lack of flavor. The Buffalo cauliflower was the best thing I ate. The only downside was it wasn’t very crispy, I know it’s very hard once you add sauce. The sauce was flavorful and had a little kick to it. I would order those again. Overall, the food was meh especially for the price and reputation. Everything seemed bland or not cooked as intended. I would guess it was an off night. I would consider attending a cooking class here, but I don’t think I would eat at the...
