We're staying in Kingston and had reservation here last night. We were excited to try this place out given the reviews it has received on here and Yelp. Walking to the restaurant, finding the main entrance was confusing as they have clearly expanded over the years and left all the doors visible from the outside. Walking in my husband who is French, asked if this was the restaurant and told them we had a reservation, the man who greeted us from behind the bar was not a friendly or inviting. Pointed to a table we could sit at. Our waiter who didn't introduce himself (tall & average weight) who refused to speak French with my husband even though he clearly was French too and understood him. The food was under seasoned, my husband ordered the lamb dish and I ordered the duck confit over warm apple purée which was very sweet. We were dining with our toddler who is accustomed to eating out. When asked for a kids menu or a side order of pasta for him. The waiter looked at me like I was crazy. Umm kids need to eat too. The only thing he offered was a side of french fries. I asked for a cocktail menu, again he looked at my like I was asking for something completely unexpected when visiting a restaurant. He said we don't have one but we have a full bar. I decided to order a margarita with salt my husband had a beer. When we eat out we normally have aperitif and a bottle of wine or cocktails with dinner. After noticing the service and getting my margarita we decided not to order anything else. The margarita was degueulasse, clearly from a mix; if your pouring it from a mix don't have the nerve to us charge $16. I had one sip and it sat on the table all night, waiter didn't ask or offer anything else in its place. Do yourself a favor and take your business somewhere else. This place has clearly been around too long and have lost touch with their customers.
The only kind staff we encountered was the older waiter on our way out. Sadly he didn't have our...
Read moreMe and my partner really wanted to like this restaurant. We have been traveling throughout the Hudson River Valley for the last year, taking trips to different restaurants.(we both have worked in the restaurant industry for many years and travel for fun and for research). Throughout out trips to Kingston we have asked wait staff what their favorite places to go and eat are, Le Canard Enchaine was not one that was really brought up. The only reviews we got were people saying that they had been there many years ago. Based on this, other reviews, and our experience last week, it’s safe to say that this restaurant is not what it once was. Our food while edible, lacked in the flavor department, (ie. summer tomato’s with absolutely no flavor) and was served with wilted salads. The drinks, while good, were extremely expensive and one was served without any garnish. When a French martini is $20 it should be served with an orange slice or orange twist. It’s truly a shame because we really wanted to like this restaurant based off the menu and the overall look, however I don’t think the quality of the food matches the prices. With so many other Hudson Valley restaurants offering fresh local produce and meats, it’s unlikely we will be making...
Read moreLe Canard has been my favorite French restaurant since it opened about 20 yrs ago. They are consistently DELICIOUS. Always a fun staff and the place is beautiful, I feel like I'm in Paris when I go there. The owner Jean Jacques is incredibly generous and gracious. I remember after work one day , i went to enjoy a mArtini and chef came out with a whole fish seasoned and cooked to perfection. He cut it up so everyone could have some at the bar. I hAve enjoyed many meals there but faves include the escargot(which they prepare to order so you have to wait 15mins ), the mussels served different ways but all are yummy and you need more bread for dipping , the steak with frites, made the real French way...wait til you try those fries! His menu is varied enough so that everyone can pick out a delicious dish, for example, you can order a Cajun chicken sandwich(again seasoned and cooked perfectly) served on a baguette with apple slices and a salad. The bread and butter is a treat too, they always serve the bread hot and crispy, soft on the inside. I think he gets his bread from NYC. The desserts are amAzing, especially his chocolate mousse cake which is my favorite dessert of all time. They make perfect cappuccinos too...
