Love this place! Around the time they’d just opened I moved near the area, and though I’ve moved again since, this place is always worth crossing town for. It’s a cute little hole in the wall kind of local restaurant, with Asian-fusion style food to die for (kind of the equivalent of Japanese style Tex-mex I’d say). The restaurant itself is pretty small, so on a Friday night it can get pretty busy, but never so busy that you should have to wait an unreasonable amount of time. If you’re coming by in the colder seasons, the ramen and warm sake is a wonderful treat, and for those coming by in the summer there’s wonderful outside seating, cold drinks, and many more menu options that are more suitable to the weather. I personally recommend the beef yakitori and the tofu bites for someone looking for a smaller meal- especially since the ramen portions will almost always leave you with enough for lunch the next day! In terms of vegetarian options or for those with food allergies, the kitchen and staff are always considerate and do their best to make accommodations. The only downside, which is common of this bustling part of town, is that there’s only street side parking, and the building itself is a little tight for visitors with mobility devices such as walkers or wheel chairs. That being said, I’ve never had staff say a single word or be anything less than truly accommodating about my service dog, so I certainly trust them to do their best to make the space as accessible as possible. If you’re looking for a fun little place to grab some good food or unique Japanese style drinks, this is definitely a great...
Read moreThe ramen here is fine. There’s additional charges for any extra toppings or extra noodles or to even make it spicy. I had the pork bone broth ramen and unfortunately while the broth was delicious, the actual pork was chewy and fatty. This isn’t sliced pork belly, more like pork pieces you’d find in a Chinese take out dish. I also had the tempura fried green beans and I have to say, those were super tasty.
When my table was sat, we were told it would be awhile for him to get to us and we got to watch 2 other tables come in after, get their menus and water, while we sat with nothing. At some point one of us got up and grabbed the menus ourselves, meanwhile I was online looking at the menu and subtly looking for another place to go because we were being ignored. It’s a weekend so I get it but… there’s a mandatory 20% gratuity. Meaning, it was already added to my check without my knowledge prior. You have to really pay attention to your receipt so you don’t accidentally give a 40% tip because your second receipt will ask you for “additional gratuity.”
I’m usually all for a standard 20% tip, but I don’t really enjoy not being given a choice. Perhaps they have that in place so they can do things like seat a table and ignore them for 20 minutes to sit other people. For sub par ramen and service that doesn’t care about you because they know they’ll get their 20% anyway, I’m not sure...
Read moreWas recommended by some friends to go here. I definitely didn't have the same experience they had. The salt and pepper squid was small, poor quality, and over done with a basic soy based sauce. I'd much prefer salt and pepper squid at other Asian restaurants in roc. We also got beef lettuce wraps but it was a little greasy and made the lettuce wilt, plus it was over cooked and gluey from over worked rice. The flavor was OK, but nothing special. Next we shared dumplings, which were fine, but again not great, tasted like the frozen ones from Trader Joes. Finally we shared "sesame chicken" which was abysmal. The breading on the chicken wasn't crispy and sloughed off into the sauce making the sauce clumpy and gloopy from too much cornstarch. The chicken was dry, the rice seems old and brittle, and the sauce was bright orange and cloyingly sweet, and very orangey. It could have been orange dessert chicken as much as it was "sesame." I didn't choose that dish, but I'd much rather eat sesame chicken from a take out place, or even wegmans. All that being said the server was friendly and pleasant and very attentive. I guess to be fair it's a ramen place and didn't get ramen so maybe that's where they put their focus and maybe I'd try it again, but I'd never get anything else from there, there's too many good authentic Asian restaurants in roc. Plus, I can make my own...
