I recently ate at Oko to celebrate a friends visit to my hometown of Rye, NY. I would like to start by stating that my family, friends, and I have dined at Oko many times since it opened on Purchase St. We make it our business to support the local restaurants knowing that many have failed within this particular part of town due to either poor food or even worse customer service. Overall the food at Oko has been excellent. The service has been decent as well.
However, my most recent experience left an incredibly bad taste in my mouth and will ensure that I NEVER return to Oko. Mind you, my table was ordering non stop dishes and cocktails and fully intended on continuing to show our patronage… that is until we were essentially told that our time was up after an hour and that another party needed our table and we needed to transition to the crowded bar area. We were APPALLED by this LOW CLASS move and were utterly insulted. I have eaten at Michelin star restaurants and never received this treatment. It was an absolute EMBARRASSMENT and the ownership at Oko should be ASHAMED. If the restaurant is that desperate to turn tables while customers are still eating then they will not last long in Rye and will be out of business.
I will make it my business to issue this complaint to the NY Chapter of the Better Business Bureau and Rye Economic and Business Council to inform them of this matter.
Abraham did his best to provide excellent service after we were insulted and apologized for the rudeness of his colleagues. We tipped him handsomely despite the POOR TREATMENT. If you are in Rye DO NOT DINE at OKO. Dine at FOGAMA instead where they know how to treat customers with class and grace. As long time resident of Rye there are MANY, MANY better places to dine. Zero rating for this...

I would not come here for sushi other than the butterflied shrimp piece, nor for the fusion dishes as they were somewhat disappointing - beautifully plated, but the taste was not quite hitting the mark.
We did the omakase experience and we had a nice evening overall. The food could be better and it was both far from authentic Japanese flavors, composition, and textures, as well as leaning more towards beautiful presentation rather than taste. Service was excellent, drinks were top notch, and atmosphere was nice (except servers banging into my chair all night long due to the location of our table in the middle of the room).
The sushi rice was somewhat mushy and its quantity and flavor profile overpowered the fish for almost every piece other than the shrimp. No finger wipe for between nigiri pieces, wasabi, ginger or a bowl was provided. The wagyu piece did not have enough sear in its preparation, making it more stringy than in what we have come to expect from a great sushi place, and less enjoyable. The uni shot was not really a shot and not served that way, and it did not taste great. Maine uni was used, whereas uni from Japan is preferred. Sake was served in regular glasses instead of sake glasses for some reason. The tofu in the otherwise tasty miso soup was tough and did not absorb or complement the flavor of the soup. There were a bunch of other little misses that made things not quite right here and there, but not terrible- just...
Read moreOko in Rye, NY was delicious! I went about 3 weeks ago for my birthday and the food and experience was something to remember. I didn't want to forget to leave a great review. I tried the Omakase menu/service and the food was very impressive. This service is offered at the intimate bar but did not take away from the evening. The chef created small meals that were creative and unique, like a seasoned "oyster shot" served in a decorative glass, which is how the experience started and it just kept getting better. The sushi was certainly of high quality and very tasty. I was the most impressed by our server, Kendra, who described each unique meal serving with precise descriptions of the type of fish, ingredients and preparation, which simply added to the overall experience. She was wonderful! It's about an hour and half long serving session and highly recommended.. pricey for sure, but...
