I have occasionally eaten at Carlo's for the past decade. After Golf Practice at what was formerly known as Roosevelt HS, I hold fond memories where my friends and I would go across the street to get a couple delicious cheap slices and it was great. With that being said, I have had many negative experiences the last few times I have gone there..so negative, that I felt the need to write this review.
I wish I could rate the dine in experience differently because it has been a lot more positive than ordering takeout, but sometimes I just want to enjoy my order in the comfort of my own home.
With that being said, the other day my wife and I decided to order takeout and were met with the most passive aggressive, condescending, and overall intimidating woman over the phone. I have never experienced anything like this while ordering food from ANYWHERE. It was actually surreal. I dont know if she was just having a bad day or what, but from the customers point of view, it was very awkward because I she was condescendingly taking my order as if she had no other choice to be there at that point in time. She altered her tone to highlight my mispronunciation of certain dishes as if I was ordering in the heart of Italy!
Anyways, after the phone call I went to go pick up my food and there were two women working the pickup. This blonde woman was very quiet, calm, and polite. However, this brunette woman with glasses was on the phone with another customer and I recognized her voice. In the 45 seconds that I was there to get my order, she would pause mid conversation to make faces, put her hand on her face, or shake her head, all while holding this very fake (and clearly transparent) persona. It was very awkward (but kind of funny actually), and I finally got my food and left. Lady, whoever you are, I think id rather you not be working there more than YOU would rather not be working there. You don't get to be that rude to customers, especially when you get my order wrong!!! Not to mention the fact that I actually like Angelina's in Tuckahoe better. They are a lot more professional and less than 5 minutes away..My wife and i agree that we will not be eating there for a long while, or maybe...
Read moreHave been coming to Carlos for a long time now. We usually order pick up and eat at home especially during Covid. We ate inside once a few yrs back but normally take out. Our go to meals are usually chicken parm, chicken francese with sautéed spinach and calamari and baked clams. Today 11/8 we ordered Chicken Francese with sautéed spinach and Shrimp Scampi over linguini. When we got home we noticed the shrimp scampi was drenched in an excessive amount of oil and there was no flavor no garlic whatsoever and the noodles were soggy as they sat in this weird concoction of oil. The chicken francese smelled good but when tasted lacked the lemon and wine flavor we grew to love from this restaurant. Didn't even have the slices of lemon we usually get. For two dishes we also received a small offering of seeded bread which was hard as a rock and we like to use it to slop up the sauces in the dish. Overall this is the first time we received food from here that did not taste anywhere near it being made by them or even at home. We waited over 45 minutes for the food to be ready which didn't even take this long during the quarantine and we travel about 20 minutes to get to this restaurant. I urged my fiancee to call them and let them know but he said he won't order this dish from them again and didn't want to make a fuss. Unfortunately I am a fan of the chicken francese dish and would probably never order anything else from them as I am stuck in my ways when ordering out as I cook most things I love at home. I don't know if it was another cook today but it was awful. Again we've been coming here for yrs. Both of us also ate here in the 90s when we had lunch at Roosevelt high school...highly disappointed in the taste and quality of their food today after a long Sunday and decided not to cook at home...I would have taken a Pic of the shrimp scampi showing the oil but after he ate the shrimp he was so disappointed as it was highly inedible and threw the pasta portion in the trash. The highlight of our dinner was the wine we brought to accompany the usually delicious meals we...
Read moreThe room was too old for the money I paid; I found chopped hairs at bottom of ice bucket & hairs on the floor of the shower. The phone buttons would not work; TV was too to small to see clearly from my bed; there was no note pad in the room; bugs were crawling out of the right sink (there were 2 sinks) which had a rusty old drain stopper; shower water was hard to adjust; shower head twisted off when I tried to make the spray wider (it was a narrow spray/stream - then I found out it was a 'dummy' or nonfunctional spray adjuster; according to the technician (who said the phones were affected by a recent power outage) the hotel would not provide door shoppers for the 2 doors which adjourned my sister's & my rooms. Instead he told us to use towels to keep them open. It was a no smoking floor; however, after the first night there, there was a constant strong odor inside our rooms & in the hallway. After I reported it, the odor was still there but then someone (not the housekeepers cuz I asked them about it) used a strong scent which was just as bad to cover up the smell. Later, I recognized it as some cheap-smelling overwhelming & unpleasant incense. The room looked ugly compares to what was shown on the website. Then I realized there was no coffee maker. I found out that it was due to Covid that no coffee makers were allowed in the room. Also, I like having a full bathroom. This one only had a shower & separate room for a toilet. It was a depressing stay & my sister voices her unhappiness about it as soon as we got in. She had a guest w/ her & paid over $600 for her 3 nights. I paid close to $500 for my room. These rooms r the type they give as comp rooms for regular playing guests who come often (not habitual high rollers). They really need to upgrade their hotel if they want guests to come back. And they need to be as strict about the no smoking rooms as they are strict about not allowing coffee makers in the rooms because that is another health...
