This rating is for the new owners of Vacaros. First, I have to say I love the remodel. It is reminiscent of the old, while giving it a much needed face-lift. Additionally, the service was excellent. The girl that helped us was so friendly and walked us through all the pricing and items.
To be honest, I was not a fan of the OLD Vacarros (even though I was a customer for 30+ years) and had actually returned many items due to them being sour or stale, before ultimately deciding not to patronize them anymore in recent years. The NEW owners have really put a focus on freshness and you can tell. Everything now is made in house, whereas previously many of the cookies were brought in from outside bakers. Even the Italian cookies are now made in store, whereas previously they were not!
Some items I have tried included the jelly filled cookies, linzer tarts, rainbow cookies, rye bread loaf, and chocolate fudge cake. Some things I liked better than others of course, but you can tell everything is fresh and homemade. I can't wait to return to try other things because honestly... it all looks good.
If you are local definitely check out the new Vacaros and keep an open mind. Yes they have the same name, but they are new owners with their own recipes as well. I wish them much success. We need a great local bakery and this spot more than...
Read moreTerrible experience both with the employees and the food. We wound up going later in the day and upon arriving all of the workers looked like they had experienced a bad day. None were friendly and their faces were either frowns or angry looks. The girl who took us was a bit rude when helping us and we almost walked out. The donuts were ok, but the brownies were stale and hard with like I was eating a softened biscotti? It made absolutely no sense as these are the standard icing type brownies you get at every bakery. The only thing soft was the icing. Honestly, they all tasted disgusting. Lastly, the crumb cake and and danish tasted stale but we already knew that they were the ends so we took a chance on them anyway. DO NOT GO HERE LATER IN THE DAY! Others have said, the customer service of the workers are terrible. Perhaps, it was not because it was late in the day but because the people here are just not happy - and it comes across in the food as well. A shame, as I have eaten pastries from here (normally earlier in the morning) and they were great. It has been a couple of years so this place must be going down unfortunately. I only hope they...
Read moreDisappointing to say the least. Just stopped in to pick up doughnuts, crumb cake, cookies, and hard rolls. The service was perfect and the place is spotless. No complaints there.
The chocolate frosted dounts are large, but much more like cake than a doughnut. Dense at the top and soft at the bottom. Not what they once were. Honestly, dunkin donuts reliably do a better job.
The crumb cake (powdered) has slipped worse. Looked like ordinary crumb cake in the case. I get to eating it and realize they are 90+% cake and less than 10% crumbs. That really needs to change. I would hope it's not a cost savings measure because I think I can speak for my entire family in saying we don't go to Vaccaros to cheap out.
The chocolate cookies are pretty good, I'd go 8/10 on them.
Finally, the hard rolls seem to be unchanged from my childhood and are still the best in the area.
Please take this review in stride and think about making some changes to your doughnuts...
