My latest experiences have been not been fantastic. I always give restaurants a few chances. The NY style pizza is spot on perfect and the Riboletta soup is so nice and rich and hearty. Gioâs redeemed themselves, but fell down again.
Update: My daughter thoroughly enjoys the Island Calamari. Beautifully and lightly breaded, accompanied by a wonderful garnish of marinated zucchini and a wonderful tomato-based dip that is a great alternative to the typical tomato cocktail sauce that every random restaurant tosses in with their overly breaded calamari.
Gioâs is a hidden gem in NEPA with honesty true NY style pizza and a beautifully crafted menu for all to enjoy. But, the entrees and soups widely vary from delivery to delivery. I truly believe in keeping my business local, but the inconsistency has become distressing, particularly when incorrect entrees are delivered and the same soup varies widely from different orders. I donât quite understand what the issue is.
Update:
Tonight, as a rare treat I ordered from Gioâs and Iâm sorry to say that the food is declining rapidly. I donât want another free coupon for a bowl of soup; I simply want what Iâm paying for. From the photos, youâll see the sickly-orange âGrandmaâs Penicillin soup. The menu described this as bone broth?? I donât know what has happened, but when this first appeared on the menu, I ordered it and was delivered a rich brown hearty broth, with protein, pastina and a very delicate amount of cheese. (I wish I had taken a photo of it). But, as I do with almost every restaurant, I give things a second chance in case they had an âoffâ night. But as the photos will show, my âbone brothâ was once again a sickly-orange, served with a few soup spoons of pastina, ZERO chicken, no herbs, vegetables or salt. It went from fabulous to hospital-grade chicken soup since it debuted.
The âItalian Stallionâ is normally nothing more than what I normally order except I usually add mushrooms. Since the upchqrge from Gioâs for a sprinkling of simple, baby white mushrooms is $3 for a pie, I opted out of it. But my two takeaways from this pie was the simple lack of the menu quoted âfennel, black pepper sausage crumbleâ and the inconsistency of the pieâs cooking. There was hardly a sprinkling of sausage on the pie, perhaps a handful (at best), of sweet green peppers and overloaded with cheese. Almost $40 (and my soup was free after I raised these same issues about it the last time) is absurd.
Stick with their NY pie which is the thinnest youâll find in NEPA, their calamari or their chicken Milanese.
I donât take satisfaction is leaving a bad review; but the drastic change in such a short window of time makes me feel as if corners are being cut so early in what was a spectacular meal in the past. I donât need another free bowl of soup, Iâll just buy a can next time instead: What really upset me was what put Gioâs in a class of their own in the past; the fresh basil leaves served with their pies. Take a look at the photo and ask yourself if youâd serve yourself a bug-eaten (see the hole), unwashed or thoroughly aged basil leaf to yourself? Let alone a paying customer? Just very disappointing. Perhaps Iâve had high-expectations from my previous orders, and my hopes previous missteps were just a restaurant having a bad night, but 2 bad experiences arenât a good indicator to me of future orders.
Sorry!
Update: Incorrect entree delivered. And the Italian Wedding Soup has changed radically. Iâm not sure what is happening. But when a customer pays for Chicken Milanese, he shouldnât be delivered Chicken...
Read moreOrdered from here for the first time on Saturday April 2nd 2022 which was yesterday. The buffalo chicken pizza was okay but our palettes werenât impressed by the blue cheese sauce that comes with it..somewhat bland and couldâve used heavier spicing. As for the pepperoni pizza, the actual pepperoni discs are smaller sized which is something I prefer! So, the dough is very tasty and has, I THINK, some cornmeal (?) on the underside of the pizza pie. The cheese is fantastically strong & theres a lot of itâŚthe tomato sauce is excellent. The beef stew is thick and the beef itself is shredded. I could not find any carrot nor potato chunks in it (I think they turned into mush during the cooking process) but overall, the entirety of the stew was fabulousđIâd definitely order it again! I retired from Brooklyn NY to Clarks Summit 3 years ago and have sampled all the Italian restaurants in town. While I definitely enjoyed Gioâs pizza (gonna try just a plain pizza pie next time), I currently prefer Rosarios. On the other hand, my son (an amateur chef) preferred Gioâsđ¤ˇââď¸To each his own! The staff was attentive and extremely polite and accommodating. There are some booths and tables for a quick bite and the entire interior is clean and offers a casual atmosphere. Iâm not certain if they deliver yet since theyâve only been open for a week. Bottom line: While I still need to try some of the other toppings, Gioâs does offer a really really good pizza so if you order a plain cheese pie sans toppings, you wonât be disappointedđ I give it 5 outta...
Read moreFirst I must say the food here is fantastic. I decided to try the Gio's on a friend's recommendation. I drove over an hour to get there. I wasn't disappointed. I had the sourdough pizza with cured black olives and chocolate panna cotta. I can't wait until I have the opportunity to have it again. Now for my disappointment and that is with the service. When I arrived I sat a table and looked at a menu. I then waited for someone to take my order. No one ever came. After twenty minutes I went up to the counter to order and pay. There is no sign that says to place your order at the counter. I then waited 45 minutes for my pizza which was less than the hour quoted all good. My pizza arrived not hot but luke warm. After I had my fill of pizza I decided to try the chocolate panna cotta. I went up to the counter to order and pay for it and then went back to my table to wait a good 40 minutes for it to arrive. Finally, the guy who took my order came to my table to ask if there was anything else I needed. I said I was still waiting for my panna cotta. That is when he told me it was in the cooler and I was supposed to get it myself. Had I been told this when I ordered I would not have been sitting there waiting. I am not happy about that. Next time I am going to try the Dixson City location. Hopefully the customer service is...
