First when I noticed there is a vegan cafe in clinton I was so happy! We came for a lunch and there were so many options, we didnt know what to get! The lady over the counter could see we are kind of overwhelmed with all the options but instead of trying to recommend something or help us she asked us two or three times if we are ready to order even tho there were no other customers. We decided to get a tofu bowl and a I got a seitan bowl and also matcha for a drink. Im really sorry to say that but Ive been plant based for many years, visited many vegan food spots all over the world, but these bowls were the worst Ive ever had. Basically 75% of the bowl was super dry white rice (i believe it was an instant rice, it has no flavor, no texture, not even salt was used) with no sauce/dressing/seasoning. veggies on the top were okay but again - plain veggies that were cut and placed on that terrible tasting rice with two slices of seitan next to it (the taste of seitan was okay, not good not terrible however I dont know if they marinated it themselves or bought it like that). We didnt even finish the meal because it was impossible to eat that dry rice. And I think we were not the only customers that couldnt finish the bowl because there was a huge pile of rice spilled on the grass right next to the entrance door which didnt look very appetizing. we also saw a pile of rice on the ground couple of days ago (at the same spot).
I saw a lot of people getting a wrap there, so maybe that is a “go to meal” there, but no one recommended us that. Maybe we can give them another chance and try a wrap but Im kinda disappointed with the overall experience and I definitely see a room for improvement when it comes to the stuff working over the counter and...
Read moreMy partner and I stopped in for a bite this past weekend and, sorry to say, we were disappointed. You get very little food for the price and the quality wasn't there. He got the Fakin' Egg & Chez, I got the Bacon Burger and we each got a bottle of pomegranate soda. It was $35. There were no chips, pickles or anything served with our sandwiches and the sandwiches themselves were not generous in size.
We were dining on the patio and they came out and handed us a to-go bag of our food, so we had to eat on the wrapping paper. We weren't offered plates or utensils. The one thing I asked for on my sandwich, vegan mayo, was missing, so I had to go back in and get it.
Sadly, the food did not seem to be made with love. The fakin' bacon on both of our sandwiches was soggy, not carmelized. The lettuce on my burger was wilted and brown (in the photos it appears green and soaked with oil, but it was actually spoiled in some spots) and the bun was stale. My husband's sandwich, which was served on a standard-sized bagel, was barely warm and he wasn't impressed with the flavor.
We don't mind overpaying a little bit for things if the quality is good. But we're sorry to say this mediocre food did not do a plant-based diet justice and we felt ripped off.
The worst part of our whole experience at Grounded for Life Cafe in Clinton NJ was having to walk back to our car to drop off our glass bottles so we could take them home to be recycled. This vegan cafe does not recycle, but the woman behind the counter offered to throw the bottles in the trash for us. We declined and left feeling very...
Read moreAfter reading mostly positive reviews about this place, I had high hopes. I drove out of my way to stop here for lunch before working a later shift one day last week. Here are my thoughts: I ordered a bowl that was supposed to contain black bean "mash" and vegan cheese (along with several other ingredients) -- it didn't contain either of these things, but I didn't realize it until after I was done eating. When I went back inside to let them know, the woman working there did the right thing and gave me a to-go container full of black bean mash (the only reason I'm not dropping this review down to 2 stars).
There was half a bruised avocado sliced on top of the bowl -- past its prime, but luckily still tasted okay. I also ordered a smoothie that I was not too thrilled with -- the taste was good, but it was nearly room temperature. Since I was heading into work, I just stuck it in the fridge when I got there so that I could drink a cold smoothie a couple hours later.
Lastly, even though I stated that the order was "for here" (I ate outside at one of their tables), everything was served in disposable plastic containers 😕 I really don't enjoy giving negative reviews for places, but for nearly $30 for a meal, it just...
