Google Maps knows me rather well, and all I have to do is enter the word “Thai” in the search bar. The AI then kicks in as it predicts what I would type next: “…food near me.” And this is the one that came up first on a recent visit to Clovis NM. It rated highly, and given that curry flows through my veins. I hit “Start” and listened to Google take me there straightaway.
Siam is in a rather unassuming building that has no doubt housed many other businesses through the years, but I could tell by the cars parked outside that the crowd before a typical Friday evening dinner rush could mean only one thing: that I was in for a treat.
My deduction was spot on, and I was impressed that, in addition to a huge depth and variety of signature Thai dishes, they also had a separate vegan section. I could eat without having to make any special requests! Points well scored.
I was left with a conundrum, though, because the Vegan Pad Thai sounded delicious, but so did the Vegan Curries (yellow or red). In the end, I went with the former, and added tofu for protein. In ten minutes flat I was served a bowl of piping hot noodles, tofu, and veggies, along with a side of steamed white rice.
I have written before of the Thailand government’s gastro diplomacy program, something they started two decades ago by training chefs to send to the US, as well as attracting investors. The result has been more than 5000 Thai restaurants stateside, but in three tiers of price points and and decor.
Siam falls on the low end of that scale, as do the majority of Thai places here, but that does not mean we should think any less. The food was just as good as what I have had at very posh upscale Thai bistros, but instead of the elegant surroundings, there was the usual waving cat toy and altar to the Buddha.
The service and food were of the highest order, and next time I come to Clovis, I won’t have to do my usual search. I know where...
Read moreAlright let’s talk about the price gouging scam of a restaurant that Siam bistro is. Let me start by saying the food is pretty good tasting.
-The portions are extremely small -it is very overpriced. -if you ask for water as a drink they don’t tell you they are giving you a $3 bottle of basic water and don’t give an option for tap.
If you go to door dash they charge close to double the price as their eat in menu. When calling to ask “why are drunken noodles $14 on the menu but $23 on DoorDash” she told me that DoorDash charges establishments 30%. Right off the bat DoorDash charges 15% -30% depending on the plan they choose and I know based on their frugal nature I doubt they chose the 30% plan. Last time I checked 30% of $14 is $4.20 so where did the extra $4.80 come from. This place will nickel and dime you every chance they get, it’s not worth the money and they do this because they know everyone here is lacking of options.
Go to V’s place for Thai food if you really want it or bokka if you just want some Asian food. The price for one order of noodles at V’s place is less than Siam bistro, almost double in size, and in my opinion better tasting. Don’t let this place, or any of the other predatory businesses in clovis that rely on out of options costumers,...
