First impression of Sweethoney Dessert was so-so. I came here with my boyfriend (we'll call him J) on Saturday, July 1 after 4:30 PM. When J wrote down our name on the clipboard, we stood out in the cold and waited for our name to be called. First come, first serve does not apply to this place. The host/hostess only calls your name based on the number of people in your group. Profit over customer service gave me reason to subtract 1 star.
AFTER ONE HOUR OF WAITING, a male host called our name as well as three other pairs of people. As J and I sat down, I noticed that space was very limited within the room. Furthermore, the host moved our table to accommodate a woman that wanted to sit on the leather seat rather than the metal seat. I sat so close to the edge that I barely had space to move around so as not to bump into the woman next to me. If you have an issue with claustrophobia, this dessert place may not be for you. It was so cramped that servers had to give your neighbors' order above you. And no, there aren't any to-go options since this shop just opened up two weeks ago.
Now, let's move on to the food. Complimentary tea was great. I ordered a bowl of shaved ice with a scoop of matcha green tea ice cream, a scoop of vanilla ice cream, scoop of grass jelly cubes and half of a strawberry. I enjoyed my dessert, but J did not enjoy his dessert. J ordered durian and glutinous rice ball over shaved ice. J has never had durian before, so this first taste definitely killed it for him because he couldn't get past the smell and taste. If you've never had durian, know this: it tasted like raw garlic and onion with a scent of rotten egg and old socks. One reviewer mentioned fresh fruit and the durian was definitely FRESH. So fresh that it permeated throughout the room, so if you don't like the smell or taste, take this review as a fair warning.
Overall, I won't come back here again. Food presentation may be pleasing to the eyes, but everything else wasn't worth waiting AN HOUR to be seated. If you're not ok with waiting an hour, express assertive behavior. You might get some dirty looks, but if you came ahead of three groups of 4 and they were seated before your companion and you, wouldn't you become impatient too? Oh yeah, they don't serve single customers either. The host/hostesses at this business prefer if you came in a big group rather than if you came...
Read moreI visited Sweethoney Dessert on a Thanksgiving day with my friends and we had a great time. The place was clean, cozy and had a nice ambiance. The staff was friendly and helpful, and the service was fast. We ordered a variety of desserts, such as mango pomelo sago, durian pancake, grass jelly with taro balls, and black sesame soup. All of them were delicious, fresh and not too sweet. The portions were generous and the prices were reasonable. I especially liked the mango pomelo sago, which had chunks of fresh mango, pomelo and sago pearls in a creamy coconut milk base. It was refreshing and satisfying. The durian pancake was also very good, with a thin crepe wrapping around a layer of whipped cream and durian pulp. The durian flavor was strong but not overpowering, and the texture was smooth and creamy. The grass jelly with taro balls was a classic Taiwanese dessert, with chewy taro and sweet potato balls in a bowl of chilled grass jelly. The grass jelly was smooth and had a subtle herbal taste, and the taro balls were soft and flavorful. The black sesame soup was a warm and comforting dessert, with a rich and nutty flavor. It was thick and smooth, and had some rice balls in it for extra texture. I enjoyed all of these desserts and would definitely come back to try more. Read moreLate-night Hong Kong style dessert! On a spontaneous Tuesday night, Sweethoney was still open till 11pm, pretty loud and lively. Parking in the plaza is plentiful and convenient. When we got here around 9, the store was mostly full. Though we got seated promptly, we had to wait for a bit for our orders. They gave us hot tea, which was nice!
The menu was on an ipad, and it was pretty overwhelming with the sheer number of pages and options (in a good way?).
I really liked both of the things we tried: K1 - coconut milk with taro & peach gum (cold) - the coconut milk blended nicely with the taro, and the drink wasn’t too sweet. The bits of peach gum added texture and were pretty satisfying. I don’t think it even had ice, so it was even good the following day. D3 - durian & grass jelly with vanilla frost - everything paired so well! The scoop of durian went along very nicely with the vanilla shaved ice cream (which also has a light feel, not too sweet), and the grass jelly was nice for balance.
Everything’s served in plastic single-use containers now - I remember the days of Sweethoney’s distinctive yellow dishes… maybe someday they’ll return!
It’s great if you’re open to Asian dessert flavors - many options to...
