Holy cow. It's about time Columbia City got some good food! Tokyo Restaurant has a cool vibe, good music, friendly and capable staff, and amazing food. Everything was made to order and served up hot (or cold in the case of the sushi) and fresh.
This place is awesome! We'll definitely be making the drive from Fort Wayne.
First, the Jade Roll. It was so delicious we wolfed it down and didn't even get a pic. Avocado, cucumber, and seaweed salad wrapped in seaweed and rice. It was fresh, crunchy, sweet and a little acidic. It was very refreshing.
I had the veggie yaki soba. The noodles were chewy and gingery, the veggies were cooked to tender but not to mush. Everything had that great seasoned wok flavor.
The fried tofu is almost like hot donuts. The exterior is a rice flour breading that was sweet, a little crispy and a little chewy. The tofu inside is really hot! It's also silky and smooth. The dipping sauce adds the real sweetness. It really is a lot like eating a fried donut.
My wife had the steak udon. It's sort of like a noodle soup with fresh veggies and chunks of beef simmered in a super rich broth, topped with a fried egg. She says it's incredible, one of the best soups she's ever had. Great meal for...
Read moreDon’t waste your time! We ordered Teriyaki Salmon, Habachi Vegetables, seaweed salad, General Taso Chicken, and Habachi Chicken. We went at 4:30 on a Friday to avoid a rush. All the food was either luke warm or cold. The Miso soup was a cold mizo broth with not fully hydrated kelp an a few tofu dices. The salad was iceberg lettuce with some type of weak tasteless dressing. The spring roll was cold and clearly had been made hours before. It was like eating a 3 day old french fry. The vegetables were mostly onions with a few shards of zucchini tossed with lots of soy sauce. The Salmon was a 4 oz filet with bottled teriyaki sauce poured over it. You can get better General Tso chicken from the freezer section of the grocery. All in all you can get better food at the “ Oriental Buffet”. But if you want good Japanese go...
Read moreI really wanted to love this place. The decor from the street looks awesome. Once inside there was some box clutter and a peculiar smell. For a Saturday night they did not have much business. We ordered Happy roll, Tonkotsu ramen, and chicken hibachi. Soup and salad come with the hibachi chicken. The soup was miso and came out luke warm. The salad dressing had the consistency of apple sauce and was bland. The happy roll was gummy and the roll felt room temperature which was a little worrisome. The ramen came out slightly warm and needed help in the flavor department. The hibachi chicken was terrible. The chicken was dry and the mushrooms were not even cooked. The fried rice just tasted like white rice. The service was fine and everything came out quickly. I don’t believe we will be back because of poor...
