A delicious change of pace for people accustomed to the fast casual experience of a Chipotle looking for something more outside the box. Using that template of Base, Protein, Hot sides, Cold sides and Sauces gives you an idea of what to expect.
Today was my second trek to Afra Grill and I dig it so much I felt it needed a shout out. Both times I have chosen the Mullaweh as my base. I grew up on Ethiopian food, so my closest comparison is the almighty injera. This serves a similar function but the flavor is different. Whereas Injera is a spongy, sourdoughesque texture and flavor, Mullaweh is described as closer to a crepe. They're not wrong, as it has a much sweeter - borderline pancake flavor. On its own, it might be a bit cloying, but with some spicy meat wrapped inside? Amazing.
Speaking of meat, my first round was the Goat and my second was the Chicken Suqqar. Those uninitiated in the mysterious world of eating goat, don't fear: it's a texturally similar experience to beef, but closer to lamb flavor-wise with a less gamey aftertaste. As a man who has downed many an Indian/Pakistani goat dish, I know the main peril with these is that there is often a little work involving bone/cartilage avoidance. It can get messy, but it's worth it.
Speaking of South Asian delights, if I had to compare the Chicken Suqqar to a commonly eaten dish - it is very similar to the Indian buffet staple Butter Chicken (Murgh Makhani.) When the menu has the chili peppers on the menu, don't ignore them. 1 pepper indicates a very comfortable level of spice, 2 is game time, and 3 (like the green sauce) is for serious contenders only. I ain't afraid of no heat, but that sauce gives me the hiccups. I highly recommended the spicy variant of the fantastic sauce, though. It's a great blend of sweet/heat. Consider it African yum yum sauce.
To top it off, if you opt for a fairly spicy set of ingredients like I did today - I suggest pairing with an Afra Iced Tea. Similar in a lot of ways to a Chai tea, it packs a nice autumnal spice blend with a creamy cold tea.
So the next time you're looking over from the double lane drive thru of the corporate clown burger shop next door ordering your McLunch, consider breaking away from the pack and trying something made with actual veggies. I promise it'll...

I recently visited Afra Grill and was blown away by the delicious flavors and aromas of the dishes. The Bomb Chicken was a standout dish, with perfectly marinated and grilled chicken that was juicy and tender. The spiciness was just right, adding a little bit of kick without overwhelming the palate. The spicy Jollof Rice was another winner, with fluffy grains of rice mixed with an irresistible blend of spices and vegetables. The Mulawax (Somali Crepes) was a delightful dessert option, with thin, delicate crepes that had just the right amount of sweetness.
The restaurant itself has a warm and inviting atmosphere, with beautiful decor that transports you to Africa. The service was excellent, with friendly and knowledgeable staff who were happy to explain the dishes and offer recommendations.
Overall, I highly recommend Afra Grill for anyone who wants to experience the delicious and diverse flavors of African cuisine. Whether you're a seasoned fan or new to the cuisine, you're sure to find something to love at this fantastic restaurant. Don't miss out on the Bomb Chicken, spicy Jollof Rice, and Mulawax - they are truly...
Read moreWell Columbus, I saw this restaurant while enroute from the gym one morning and insured myself that I must try it one day, and today is that day. Well positioned on busy Morse road is Afragrill.
We arrived in good time to enjoy in some of their splendid cuisine. First, the atmosphere. A classy adorned restaurant, complete with plenty of space and careful cleansing and sanitation for customers safety. A great spot for a Friday or Saturday night dinner before other nights activities.
I indulged in the jollop rice for a base with bomb chicken, their spicy hot fare, which was absolutely delicious. I had sides of the corn, red onions and plantains, accented with a sambusa beef patty, which was spicy and outstanding some bashaal juice (pineapple, mango and coconut juice) which was spectacular to a fruit juice lover like me. My friend had the pili-pili chicken, which had some spicy, bit no where near the fire of the bomb chicken, combined with corn, plantains and kachumbari (fresh salad). Also tried was a Nafako, a boiled egg, wrapped in mashed potato, then fried with a light crunchy crust on the outside, which I heard was wonderful.
All in all, this experience was outstanding and a definitely a return to spot. Significant also that they have a drive up window for your convenience. Five star rating AfraGrill. I'll...
