Choripan Argentine Grill in Dublin, Ohio, is excellent and I highly recommend!
As someone who has been chronically gluten intolerant for the majority of my lifetime, finding Choripan was a dream come true. I have never had empanadas due to my gluten intolerance, but, of course, had always wanted to try them. I was so pleased to discover that the chef/owner created his own proprietary flour blend that is gluten free, nut free, grain free, soy free, and seed oil free, and that EVERYTHING in the restaurant itself was gluten free!
Between three adults, we split 6 empanadas, all with different fillings: 1 carne (beef), 2 jamon y queso (ham & cheese), 1 champinon (mushroom), 1 chorizo, and 1 pato (duck). All fillings were incredible, but we especially loved the champinon and chorizo. The dough was tender but somehow flaky (NO idea how this was achieved with a gluten free dough) which was delicious and very impressive. We also ordered potato salad, chimichurri fries, plantains, and apple fritters. The potato salad was good, but was slightly under-salted (though this may have just been a personal preference). The chimichurri fries were essentially fries that were tossed in their homemade chimichurri salsa. I am a potato fiend, so I loved these. The chimichurri salsa was delicious: tangy and flavorful. The plantain chips, being less sweet than banana chips, were not sweet at all--in fact, they reminded me very strongly of black pepper kettle chips and were enjoyable. Lastly, the apple fritters were a pleasant surprise. To those of you who are also GF, you know a GF apple fritter is extremely rare. While the fritters were not overly sweet (which is the case for many non-American desserts), all sweetness was presumably derived from the apples themselves--of which there were several large chunks of apple within the fritters. The fritter dough was springy and soft with a pleasant mouthfeel. So good!
The service was wonderful! There were only two people working in the whole establishment: a woman who took food and drink orders, and the chef/owner himself, who was preparing everything fresh to order, and served the food to customers himself. While I'm sure this process is exhausting for him, I loved being able to connect with the chef/owner and thought it demonstrated his commitment to his product and customers.
Space: Considering Choripan originated as a food truck (and still operates the truck on select days), the space itself was quite small and sparse. There is room in the establishment for possibly 20 people to dine-in. Choripan does not do reservations, so I recommend calling ahead to see if there is room for your party to dine-in. While I could see that Choripan attempted to put a personal touch on the decor, the atmosphere was overall a bit cramped and mismatched, which I do not consider a character flaw of the business as they are small and are operating two separate spaces (truck and physical operations).
Overall, I highly recommend Choripan, especially to those of you who are also struggling with dietary restrictions. We will...
Read moreI ate the best empanadas I have ever had.
And everything here is gluten free. Many healthy options, which includes the beverages and the food.
I brought a few things home for my "not hungry wife who immediately ate an empanada and three desserts (with the help of one of my daughters).
And try the sweet potato fries; even if you don't like sweet potato fries. These are amazing.
Went back with more celiac family members who are not used to being able to eat anything on the menu.
Chicken noodle soup... my wife was really really impressed.
The crust on the pizza is pretty amazing and is not the usual gluten free cracker crust.
The salsas are eaten with an empanada.
If you like spice, get the habanero, it is really good if you like heat. Normally have a narrows are too hot for me, but, you add as much as you want and it has a good flavor. It really is not too hot if you can handle some heat.
If you like avocado, get the palta salsa. I eating it with a fork. I couldn't help myself.
Salsa criolla is a really good salsa, I really liked it.
Chimichurri very good if you can handle the vinegar. My suspect this is very typical for Argentina.
My daughter was excited to try some wings that she enjoyed. And she got fries with it but then she and my wife both devoured them.
As an American, you might prefer more sugar in your desserts, but, if you're on the healthier side, you will probably be very pleased with what you get. I have family members that normally skip dessert are quite happy with these. I have taken desserts to go a couple times than my family has really enjoyed these.
There are still so many more things to try. In other words, many things to explore and I have not...
Read moreCame here for lunch today and I was pretty disappointed after seeing all the rave reviews. We might be back for the empanadas but that’s probably it. When we came in a man greeted us then went to the back. I think it was the owner/chef. Then a woman came from the back with her head completely in her phone and without looking up at us threw out a greeting. She remained on her phone for a while longer... We clearly hadn’t been there before and once she was done with her phone she just kinda stared at us while we were looking at the menu and discussing options. She didn’t offer suggestions or ask if we had any questions. Did I mention we were the only ones in there? We ordered to share: 2 empanadas (chicken and steak), the steak platter, and a side of salsa. All together plus tax and tip was over $30, but wasn’t worth it and we were both still a little hungry afterward. I asked what else came on the “platter” and the woman working the cash register looked at me like I had a 3rd eye. I repeated myself bc I’m wondering if it included rice, veggies, beans, something and she’s says it doesn’t come with anything but the small side we chose but the empanadas have a piece of lettuce under them.... 😑 The empanadas were delicious but $4/ea is just a little much. The steak platter was just 2 thin pieces of steak without much flavor but it came with chimichurri sauce and a small side (we got the fries which managed to be burnt and limp at the same time). The salsa criolo (sp?) suggested by the lady was extra average. Long story short it was just ok, I would give it a 2.5 stars but the empanadas boosted my...
