I've been waiting on this place to open since learning about it in July 2018 and have followed their Instagram account closely to see what they have up their sleeves. Finally had a chance to visit on a Wednesday evening for dinner and they did not disappoint!
Parking: It did not look like they had their own parking lot. I drove along Beck St. and managed to find a bunch of parking spots available, despite the street being quite narrowly lined with cars on both sides from the houses lining the street. Rating: 4/5
Location/Interior: I must say I love the location and the ambience! The exposed ductwork, the dark green seating benches, and the marble dining tables all complement each other in a very modern, simplistic way. They had candles lit on each table, which adds to the coziness of the place. Their bar area right by the entrance door was definitely very eye-catching. Rating: 5/5 for atmosphere and location.
Food: AMAZING. I was not disappointed at all. I initially ordered the Cassoulet and Tempura Cauliflower, but they ran out of the cassoulet and so I ordered the crispy fried rice instead. The food came out really fast and was beautifully plated, but most of there was so much taste and depth and flavor to it all. The soft-cooked egg in the fried rice was cooked to perfection and was the star of the dish! I highly recommend it! Tempura Cauliflower was also great. It was sweet-savory and very lightly breaded - lighter than most tempuras but definitely not light in flavor. It definitely felt more like a side dish to me than an appitizer. The prices for everything on their menu was extremely reasonable too. Rating: a whopping 6/5.
Service: This was the area that I was surprisingly disappointed with. After reading their website's "about" section and so many reviews before me, I sure did not expect this. I was a party of 1 but was seated right at a small table in the center-front of the restaurant yet it took forever for my server to acknowledge me to bring me a drink or take my order. Then when I was done with my meal, it again took forever before I was able to get someone's attention to bring me my bill. I really hope this gets ironed out with time ans hope to see them act on what their website says about sharing moments and friendship because I think this will make them stand out a whole lot as a restaurant. Rating: 3/5
All in all, I think this place is going to be really successful, especially with its unique plant-forward cuisine, and a restaurant atmosphere and delicious food that is on par with those in the Short North/German Village or dare I say it, NYC or Chicago. Glad to see a place like this pop up in Columbus, and hope it will stay for the long run! I will definitely be back again - especially when a menu rotation...
Read moreI ate a very pleasant lunch recently 1-16-2019] at Comune, a vegetarian restaurant that opened recently on Parsons Ave. several blocks south of Nationwide Children's Hospital and within view of a large Nationwide Children's employee parking garage.
The setting at Comune is superb; the food is absolutely delicious.
After having studied the menu on the Comune website in advance of my lunchtime visit; I decided to order Brussels Sprout Melt, which is served with "cheddar curds, sautéed onion, Russian mayo, and black mountain bread." I requested "togarashi fries" [flavored with togarashi, a Japanese chili blend rather than "a side of simply dressed tender greens."
I did not see any Brussels Sprouts [one of my favorite vegetables] anywhere on my plate [though the Comune staff had assured me that they had indeed been present but in a different shape]; regardless, my sandwich and the accompanying "togarashi fries" had been a real treat.
My only negative comment about Comune is that their website is difficult to navigate at first and that the words on their website are too blurry and are too small.
When I had first learned about Comune, I visited their website and spent the first several minutes clicking on words all over the home page with no result. I then noticed three parallel lines in the upper left corner of their website that allow users to access several other screens.
The bathrooms at Comune are quite interesting because they have mirrors on three of the four walls with the result that a visitor to either of the unisex bathrooms will see multiple reflected images that make it appear that that bathroom is several hundred feet in...
Read morethe service was soooooo kind and helpful, big fan of them and am grateful for how kind the servers were. genuine highlight of the night, were able to explain and answer all our questions, and checked in on us regularly:
I've heard a lot of positive things about comune and was looking forward to trying it! we tried 6 different plates and 2 desserts, between 4 people. In every bite there was a variety of flavors. my favorite part by far was the bread
we ordered pantry love, butter and radishes, chawanmushi, bread and spread, rigatoni, wild mushroom crispy rice, rhubarb sorbet and a chocolate tarte..
unfortunately, the food was not very filling. it was expensive. on one hand, I get it, there's a lot of delicate and expensive flavors, on the other hand when I spend $60 on a meal I expect it to be satisfying.
The drink was delicious and the desserts were refreshing and delightful, I just wish the rest of the meal matched that energy.
I am told the menu used to be split up into appetizers, entrees and desserts but now all dishes were in a list together which makes it more confusing to me as to portion sizes.
the food itself was extremely rich. If you aren't used to that cuisine, take it slow, because I felt very nauseous afterwards, even though I wasn't full from the food I ate.
I wasn’t impressed but maybe I’ll enjoy the menu in...
