The $40+ we paid for the food was worth it; however the service was lackluster. The seating area was tiny and had maybe 10-15 tables crammed in. It was crowded, to say the least. Which was fine, I am okay with sitting elbow to elbow with strangers for great food and experiences. We went on the 4th of July and they were quite busy, but we were seated within 2 minutes because we were a party of 2, whereas the 4 or so parties ahead of us were 3+ people. That said, I would strongly not recommend you come here with more than 4 people. There is not enough space.
Our server threw the menus on the table and ran to the back without a word. A tiny bit unwelcoming, but like I said, it was busy so we shrugged it off. She came back 60 seconds later to ask if we were ready, and as it was our first time there/apparently there is a new menu every time you go, we were not. She did not return for another 10 mins. We eventually ordered and the food came out pretty quickly, we both agreed that the food was amazing. However, since the seating was so... "cozy" the other server working had to squeeze her bum between my plate of food and the neighboring table. You know how in school the teacher would lean over to the kid next to you and their ass would be all in your face? It was like that, but imagine that ass being over your breakfast. It kind of ruined the whole meal for me, though I did finish it (because it was delicious). And it was of no fault of the server, it was just that the seating was really poor.
Additionally, between finishing our food and paying we waited probably 15 minutes. The waitress eventually brought the check over to the table, placed it down, and walked away. Mind you I had my card in hand all ready for her to take so that we could leave... but she did not return for another 5 mins. She later nicely explained that one of the servers did not show up for work that day, and apologized for our wait for everything. She seemed sincere, but I was just thoroughly annoyed by then.
Would I go back? Only on a weekday during non-peak hours and not a holiday. Like I said, the food was amazing but the service suffered. Would also probably request not to be seated at the table we were seated at, as booty over my biscuits is not...
Read moreI don't mind waiting two hours on a Sunday morning to eat. I don't mind paying $15 for breakfast. However I very much mind waiting two hours, only to finally get a seat and be told that roughly half of the already fairly limited menu is sold out. I am happy to support a small business, but I am absolutely not going to pay $13-$15 per person for my fourth-choice meal because everything else I preferred on the menu is already gone. For a business that is only open for six hours a day, and whose primary draw is brunch, you would think they would plan better for a busy Sunday morning in the spring. Being told all the food is sold out doesn't make me feel like I missed something special and it doesn't inspire me to come back, it just makes me irritated and hangry. We politely left and went to Lindey's instead.
This was my third time at Skillet and my third bad service experience. I feel they are maybe resting a bit too much on their cult popularity. The host staff acts like getting a table there is a privilege. There is a coffee station outside to appease you while you wait, but it was left without cups for so long that we went to the Starbucks up the street and came back. Also there is a menu posted outside, so you would think if items were selling out the hostess would communicate that to people who were waiting.
I overlooked the cranky hipster waitstaff the first two times I visited, but after today's experience I won't...
Read moreMy boyfriend took me to Skillet - he prepared me for a 45 min to an hour wait. The hostess was great - masterfully seating customers, answering phones, and planning the seating for upcoming customers. After noting to us that our table was almost ready, she noted to a party of 6 that she could seat 4 but the other 2 would have to wait for another table to open up. The party was defiant and wanted to all be seated at the same time - sitting at the table that was ready for us. The hostess apologized for the difficult customers, noted the next table would be for us, and offered a cinnamon roll on the house. God bless her for dealing with the difficult party! Upon seating, our waitress apologized for the interaction as well. The service was absolutely great! Very attentive and friendly!
Now - the food. The cinnamon roll was DIVINE and covered in a caramel sauce. They have house made coffee and a great selection of teas. For the mains - we ordered the pork chop and biscuits and gravy. The portion of the biscuits and gravy was HUGE. The gravy was perfect - peppery, creamy, with nice chunks of sausage. The biscuits were also delightful. The pork chop - wow, perfectly cooked, great sear, and presented on a bed of sweet potato mash. So buttery and creamy!
This place is absolutely worth the wait! Do yourself a favor and check this out! Thank you again for the great...
