Steak 'n Shake — Restaurant in Columbus

Absolutely the worst dining experience I've had at any Steak & Shake to date. My son and I stood at the register for close to 10 minutes before anyone acknowledged we were even in the restaurant - let alone seat us. When we were seated, our table was so wet from being wiped with a dirty kitchen rag that i had to go get napkins to dry it off.

30 minutes later, we finally met our waitress who took our order. When our food arrived to or table another 30 minutes later, I noticed that I was given regular fries instead of the Cajun ones I ordered. She took my plate to the kitchen and returned one minute later with my fried now absolutely drowning in a handful of Cajun spice that looked line someone had just dumped it on top of them.

The hot dog I ordered looked less appealing than a gas station hot dog so I refused to eat it. The shakes we had ordered before our meals were finally brought to the table right as we finished what we COULD eat of our food - and our request for to-go cups was apparently a difficult request because we got a lot of attitude from our waitresses for even asking.

When I went to pay for the meal, the man behind the register didn't engage us at all. No questions about our food, our experience, no "have a nice day". Nothing. As we left, we noticed the entire exterior of the building was absolutely littered with trash and garbage - so much so that it was blowing into the grassy areas surrounding the parking lot.

This place is an absolute dump, none of the employees seem to like working there and I think is in desperate need of a visit from the health department. Food value is decent provided you actually get what you order, but since they SEVERELY scaled back their menu, it's highly unlikely I'll be returning. I have made what I had thought to be a full spectrum of reviews: from great, wonderful, average, eh, harsh, angry, and absolutely awful reviews. This is the first "saddest" review I have ever made as S&S is no longer the personable, full service, quick food experience that made it fun and a great place for the family.

The good: Food was wonderful, the line cooks did a great job! The shakes were smooth and tasty, the workers did their jobs very well! The bad: The "whipped cream" on the shake was horrible. It was warm and thick. Reminded me of whipped vegetable shortening, like cheap, garbage, store bought cake icing without sugar. Don't spend the extra to get this nasty and can't be whipped cream option. The ugly: (why the S&S experience was ruined by no fault of the workers that were there and did their great job but made it so very sad.) Kiosk ordering at one of the five stations in the small entry area, having your name and/or order number called and to go to the pick up counter to get your own shakes, waters, food, drinks. The shakes were served in take-out cups and the food was in plastic baskets (remember the fancy shake glasses and real plates?), clean up your table, having to tip at the time of the order, and there was no personable interaction at the table.

A huge disappointment because the "stores" cannot get and keep people to work thanks to the cv19 reset. (This was what the one employee who actually spoke to me explained the situation to be when I asked why the change.)

The experience of S&S is now cafeteria style. AND AGAIN, by no fault of the workers there,...

Ok so here's the deal...I used to work at this location 10 years ago. I was a server. I loved my job and took pride in the place that I worked. Not only myself but other servers, line Cooks, prep and managers did as well! We cleaned and cleaned and cleaned after every shift...breakfast, lunch, dinner and late night..open 24 hours. With a restaurant that serves greasy grilled hamburgers...you have to clean that often just to keep up on the floors, windows, walls, tables and dividers between the booths. Not to mention the extra deep cleaning we had to do just to get the stains off the tables, gum from under the tables, spills and dropped food from the floor. When I went in with my husband and children this evening for dinner, I was just SAD!! Best way to describe the feeling really! It was super slow due to the level 1 snow emergency. I've been in here a few times recently and it's been dirty, food scraps and trash under tables, booth dividers gross and sticky...but gave the benefit of the doubt because it was super busy. There was one person "cleaning" and I say that lightly because she didn't even move the table she was sweeping under to get the food and trash from under the table legs. She just proceeded to leave the trash and food under the table legs and mop the floor around it. The food was good and fresh...however the cleanliness of the seating area was by far less than desirable. It's just really sad to see a place that I once took pride in, has turned into a place that probably has some health...
