I go to many Chinese restaurants looking for something that isn't American-Chinese masquerading as authentic gourmet Chinese. This place is about as close as you're going to get in Columbus for real Asian food. It probably helps they are conveniently located next to the best Asian supermarket in the city.
I have went a few times, and enjoyed every visit. I tried the duck bone stirfry, which was awesome. They have these dumplings in chilli oil that are just killer. Order it just for the oil and add it to your rice. Pour it on your eggroll, or whatever. It's that damn good. I think it's a homemade szechuan peppercorn oil.
They have many Thai dishes as well. I got their Thai Red Curry. It's way better than Hunan Lions Curry, but honestly just average. I make my own Thai curry from scratch though. I do give them props for at least using shrimp paste, and having some flavor.
Their chicken egg rolls and ragoons are also good.
So much crazy stuff on the menu for adventurous eaters. Want a Duck Blood or Frog based dish? They have many. Lots of tripe dishes, and other odd stirfry's. I will be trying those soon and editing this review.
Overall, the food is pretty good if you order right, and if you don't order right, it's still OK.
As far as service, it's an Asian restaurant. Completely different culture. Come here for the food, not the service. Be happy a restaurant exists in Columbus that isn't Human Lion or Lucky Dragon.
I have added Xin Wei to my rotation. Out of probably over 100 restaurants in the city, this is one of a out 5 that I have given this honor.
Come here for real Asian food, and you will be happy. Come here for the Karen American-Chinese specials, and miss out on what this place...
Read moreI cannot unsee what I saw today. I ordered my food online and picked it up. This is my first and last time visiting this establishment. I walked inside said I had a pick up order. My order was ready. I asked if they had any hot mustard available, she said give me one moment and went to the back, which directed my attention behind the curtain partition they have up to separate the kitchen. Below said partition was about a foot of view plus where the curtains were opened. I saw an entire box of what appeared to be fried sweet and sour chicken in a box on the floor. There was a large stainless steel pot of what appeared to be chili oil, and a heavily soiled rag folded over and touching the box of chicken chunks ALL OF WHICH WERE ON THE FLOOR!! There were people in the back walking past it brushing these items with their pant legs. My appetite was gone instantly and I just could not believe they had food prepared on the floor I'm still in shock. I hope they take my $26 and invest in a food prep table, because no where in the food prep cycle should prepared food be stored on the floor. I am not sure when the last health department visit was, but there were at least 4 employees that had no problem with it so it must be common practice. Even if it wasn't on the floor it should be kept hot or cold. No thanks. I wish I could gave given a great review about the food but I didn't get that far with what they allowed the public to see in their food prep area. Buyer beware! Unsafe food preparation practices at...
Read more9/10/22: Tried the dinner portion of spicy chicken today. It lived up to its name with fresh sliced jalapeños! There was a lot of chicken (non-breaded kind which I prefer). There was also course sliced onions and fine sliced carrots. I especially liked the sliced slivers of fresh garlic. Served in a spicy special sauce. I recommend if you like jalapeño spicy food!
8/27/22: stopped in just after 3pm and ordered dinner portion of garlic chicken to go. Plenty of chicken, carrots, green pepper, and onions. Very tasty spicy garlic sauce. Waited less than 15 min. I recommend the garlic chicken. See pic. I'll be back as I'm working through the menu items I want to try!
8/13/22: Kung Pao Triple Delight is excellent and my new favorite! I recommend Kung Pao anything!
8/6/22: ordered dinner portion of General Tso's chicken to go. The portion is huge. What I find interesting about this dish is every restaurant makes it different. This one had no carrots, green peppers, broccoli or whole hot peppers in it. It has a good flavor. The other thing is the breaded fried chicken chunks can be tough to chew; this I know better. I would have preferred the steamed/boiled/seared chicken that is used in Kung Pao chicken, however that unbreaded chicken is prepared. The spring roll is good. I'll try other dishes from Xin Wei that do not use the breaded fried chicken chunks. The picture is of half the actual order. I'm stuffed!...
