A bit of a rant to start things off, then suggestions from a someone who has spent far too much time at this restaurant: American Dream Pizza (ADP) has been fairly constant grub hub for my college years at Oregon State University. There is no better place in town to get a quick slice and a pint of delicious beer (cheaper, $2.75, on Mondays, and from 3:00-6:30pm every day you can get the pint and slice special which makes pints $2.95, as of 2016). If you get the right pizza for your taste, you will have a wonderful experience. I feel like many of the reviews on here don't do justice to how good the pizza can be. If you're someone who rates and reviews a restaurant because of a single bad experience, shame on you. If you're someone who has had multiple, consistent, bad experiences at ADP, I'm really sorry for you because you've been very unlucky. The crust will be thick on your slices, and thinner on your mini pizzas. If you don't like the marinara, try one of the three other bases they have (Pesto, Herbed olive oil, or BBQ sauce) all made in-house every morning, as are almost all of the meats cooked and vegetables prepped. Don't like paying for ranch? That's something that is also made in-house every morning. Slices didn't come out fast enough? Maybe a bunch of people ordered slices before you and all the cheese pies were used up, necessitating the by-hand formation of more giant pies to cut into 8 good sized slices. Campus Dream does delivery, and sometimes that also bogs down in-house service. Now that I have that rant out of the way, lets talk about the goods: There are 44 different toppings in total, 3 different types of dough, including a thin gluten free dough Sun-Wed, and 4 different bases. This means that on a 6 topping pizza there are well over 12,000,000 different combinations (discounting sizes of pizza and crusts as variables). You can make some pretty crazy pizzas, or you can keep things simple. Here are a few of my favorite custom combos: -Herbed olive oil base, roasted potatoes, smoked gouda, american bacon and light Italian sausage. -Smoked salmon, feta, artichoke hearts and spinach -Herbed olive oil base, fresh basil, feta, italian sausage, roasted red peppers and light rosted garlic. -Margarita combo adding italian sausage and/or feta -Dog running combo without sun-dried tomatoes -anything that mixes their house made BBQ sauce and pineapple, but special mentions for that are pulled pork and lemon herbed chicken. -anything with basil-pesto base and feta (or basil and feta) (try out pesto, feta, pineapple if you get on that pesto train and are feeling something sweet).
Play with combinations. You won't live enough days in your life to try all the possible pizzas you can create at American Dream Pizza. Also, if you want more manageable slices, ask them to be cut in half (they can do that). Almost everything about your pizza at this place is customizable. Certain aspects of pizza creation there are set, but as far as flavors go, that's...
Read moreI’ve been going to American Dream almost since it opened in 1989 (with some gaps in time when I lived elsewhere). So, I have some experience with this place in terms of in-house (often too noisy for me nowadays) and delivery (always prompt and courteous).
Let’s be fair: this is a campus pizza joint that hires, by and large, college students and college-adjacent folks. As a result, there is some churn here in terms of employees. As a result, the quality of their offerings can swing a bit. You got someone smoking the ‘Devil’s Lettuce’ and making your salad? It’s gonna turn out really, really good or really, really odd. Ditto the pizza. But, generally speaking, this place delivers (well, it does deliver as I already mentioned, but I mean it provides a good pizza, calzone, and salad . . . most of the time).
When I have return guests from out of town, they always want American Dream. Who am I to argue? I like their pizza and salads. When I have friends over, we often get American Dream. Why fix what ain’t broke? Yes, the yeasty crust divides some people. But they don’t tend to skimp on toppings and their sauce is a clear step above a lot of other local offerings (chain and unchained, because God knows there are too many pizza places in Corvallis).
And I find some of the negative reviews, well, sorta’ funny. You are a chef? Oh, wow. Do tell! You leave a ranking that is 1/5, 5/5, and 5/5 and then leave only one star? I guess you don’t understand how to rate places. You leave pictures to document the horrid slice you received and . . . they . . . don’t . . . actually . . . show . . . what . . . you . . . are . . . whining . . . about?!?! You must be a lot of fun at parties. You are mad the person on the phone didn’t want to talk with you about your life goals, so you leave a negative review? Well, I bet you have some really interesting things to share with the world. Too bad a busy employee didn’t want to be your bestie!
I recommend this place, in spite of (and, in some ways, because of) the occasional ‘off’ night. It’s local. It isn’t a chain. And it, more often than not, delivers (again, both in terms of bring it to you and providing a good product for a...
Read moreThe pizza was so bad, it made a seven year old cry. I used to agree with the old adage, that even bad pizza is still good because it’s still pizza. I have been proven wrong. We took my seven year old grandchild for some pizza. I saw some bad reviews but didn’t think anyone could mess up pizza. We ordered three lunches with a slice and a salad, and even when we said we were eating there, was not asked if we would like to add a drink. No big deal except I wouldn’t have noticed that a fountain drink was almost $4 if I had not had to buy them separately. Then we were asked what toppings did we want on the salad. The “salad” is a bowl of lettuce and there is an up charge for everything you add to it. I added tomatoes. Everything is better with tomatoes…except that salad. The child started crying because her pizza tasted bad. This is a child who will eat whatever pizza you put in front of her, whether it’s from a box in the freezer or a kids meal at a deli. I tried mine and she was right. It was inedible. I got my salad after that, and thought, at least there’s salad. The dressing came in one of those pill cups the school nurse used to give us with aspirin when we had a headache. Enough for a couple of leaves. The tomatoes were tasteless. I would like to note, we’re in a farm community and my lunch yesterday was a sliced tomato. We ordered Dominos while sitting at the table, threw away the pizzas and salads and picked up our lunch. Please save yourself and go straight to the Dominos...
