So far, I have been twice, once each for lunch and dinner. The menu is very interesting and modern. Its important to know your market and not schedule items that won't go over and 1816 has accomplished that. In choosing a variety of items, they put their own stamp on them.
My first visit I ordered the shrimp-n-grits, which are cauliflower-based grits. They have a nice thick texture but a bit more of a gravy taste than I woukd prefer. It was tasty and filling. Next visit, I ordered the pork bell on rice and this was really exciting. Thumb-sized pieces of pork belly are deep-fried and placed on top if a sticky rice roll, along with other garnish. This was amazing!
On this same dinner visit, I had the bread pudding and really wasnt a fan. The "pudding" was processed to make it smooth and baked, served with a sauce in top that was way too thick. I hope the sauce is changed in the future.
I can hardly wait for my next visit and hope this place has great success in Indiana's first state capitol.
UPDATE: Now on the 3rd visit. Had the Smashburger with an added upcharge for pork belly. Great! If service gets any better, I'm gonna have to see a gastroenterologist.
UPDATE: August 26, 2022. I've been 2 or 3 times since the 3rd visit. In this visit, my husband and I both had the General Tso dinner and it was very good. We also had the elk tartar as a starter and it was fine. Those thinking they're getting something similar to steak tartar will be disappointed so open your minds.
What was different this time was the service. There were 3 young girls at the host/ess station. We were told we'd have to wait outside while they checked to see if a table was available (at 5pm) while there were only people at 2 tables inside. After a few minutes we were collected and seated at a table inside in the 1st floor. When the server came to our table I was surprised she didn't greet us to tell us what her name was. Overall the service she gave I'd say was adequate. She brought water, took our order, brought our food, asked about dessert and brought our ticket.
If there are two pieces to dining out, consisting of food and service I'd give the food a 10 but the service a 6 or 7. Will we return?...
Read moreWe Live an Hour Away and ever since first Visit we were hooked Never a bad experience. We go ones a week and switch it up A lot Everything is Next Level And menu changes from time to time and seasons. They are very open as well and will substitute for your taste. We are addicted to the Truffle Fries we like to get the Bourbon gravy with them it’s the gravy that comes W/Larry’s Crispy chicken skin dish which is another killer dish.😋 The (( Shrimp Scampi)) is the best I’ve had and I have been all over the states very delicious. And I can honestly say their Generals Tso’s Chicken we get it fried you do have choice and I get the sauce on the side and my wife gets it drenched with the sauce it is also the best I’ve had.The Sauce is like a jalapeño jelly but not Chef Scott’s own creation Hot,Sweet, and Sticky Also Very addicting. I cannot mention the whole menu but everything I have had has been delicious and very pleased with the portions the beer is cold the music’s good and a very relaxed setting. And their BLT is absolutely awesome that is only on the lunch menu so make sure you check their hours you will not be disappointed. last time we were in we were talking with Chef Scott came out and greeted us and I told him I kicked myself last time I was there for not getting the hotdog special He actually offered to make it even though it was not on the menu so I went for it was delicious and the heirloom tomatoes were unreal. Also I believe it’s fall early winter they have a Roasted beet and squash salad it is phenomenal another go to 🤪 also you never know with the specials a few weeks ago my wife actually got ostrich fillet it was really good and I have never had ostrich was very tender and tasty! The staff is down home currently my wife and I’s favorite...
Read moreI was expecting it to be a lot better than it was. For sure the decor is much better than the old Jock's Lunch that used to be there and we enjoyed seeing the more modern and transformed space (though I think In fairness that was mostly done by the restaurant prior to this one.)
The first thing I had was a cocktail called, I think, southern tea which was a bit boring, weak, and unmemorable.
The summary for the three of us who dined there was that the halloumi salad was by far the best part--the dressing was great. The cheesecake was pretty good also, but the entrees (ramen and General Tso) and fried green tomatoes were nothing special...they were presented well but the flavors and textures were disappointing.
I should also add that the noodles in the ramen were not ramen noodles; they were more like spaghetti noodles, and the texture was al dente which is not how ramen noodles should be. I've had ramen in many places around the world, including many times in Japan, and this one was just not that good.
Also, the portions are just way too big--like three times bigger than you can comfortably finish. I would rather have 1/3 of the food for 1/3 of the cost; which leads me to price...very high for Corydon standards. I can't imagine that they'll be able to stay in business in Corydon with these prices, but who knows.
The menu is also a bit dated. Maybe shrimp and grits and pork belly everything is new for Corydon but it's a good five years behind anywhere else.
Service in general was friendly and pretty good.
It's a good thing to have a decent place to eat in Corydon but to me they have work to do as far as flavors and quality vs price.
I probably won't be back unless I hear that things have improved quite a bit. I...
