Teru Sushi is a true hidden gem in today’s over-commercialized era of food. This mom-and-pop restaurant may not look the flashiest, but the food and atmosphere speak volumes for themselves if you give it a chance.
To start, the fish is always fresh and delicious. It is clear that they pay a high price for their fish to ensure that each cut is yummy and fresh. Each piece of fish has been exactly what I have hoped for from the type of fish in question. The salmon is smooth and buttery, the tuna is always dependable, and the yellowtail has the strong flavor that you would expect, that pairs well with toppings and soy sauce, exactly as it should be. I would recommend Teru Sushi as a sushi restaurant for people who know and appreciate sushi.
The rice is delicious. That’s all you need to say, but I will say more. It was clear from the first piece of sushi that the rice is a family recipe, made with care and skill in every batch. It has always been cooked perfectly, never chewy or gummy. The rice has a lovely flavor; a very good mix of light tang and savory seasoning. It stands out from most sushi rice I have eaten in the past 10 years.
The miso soup is comforting and soothing, and a really good price per bowl. They don’t skimp on the tofu bits, either!
The couple who runs and owns the shop are very nice. I do not know their names yet but I plan on introducing myself properly soon so I can change that. The server is very sweet, and always attentive to all the tables in the restaurant. Some people me be off-put by how she checks in and keeps track of everyone, but I cannot relate to that at all. I always feel that she is respectful yet aware, and as soon as I need or want anything it seems like she is right there to take my request. If you are the type of customer to be rude to a server please go somewhere else. She deserves better than you.
The chef is quiet, but his work speaks for itself. Every roll is well made swiftly and consistently. When there was no table ahead of me, I waited maybe 5 full minutes at most before my order of 4 rolls were all on my table. He also knows how much wasabi to put for a meal, not putting a huge chunk on every plate wastefully like some places do.
The prices for their rolls are extremely fair for today’s times. They may not have the crazy extravagant specialty rolls with weird names like a lot of bourgeois sushi places have, but honestly they don’t need it. Each roll has solid flavor and it feels like I am having a meal that is good for my body and my mind instead of just going for the all-out priciest thing imaginable that isn’t even that good. I would rather have one of Teru’s delicious and solid rolls, than some off-the-rails roll named after some movie that the yuppie American who wrote the menu at an overpriced sushi restaurant didn’t even watch.
The ambiance is very pleasant at Teru Sushi. The music is standard radio fare, but never blaring loud and I can always hear myself think and focus on my meal. Being here I really felt like I had space to appreciate the moment and the fish, and the art on hanging on the walls is tasteful, making me feel like they put some of the art they themselves like into the space.
All in all, I wish I could give 6 stars on my rating, as I feel that they truly deserve it. I wish for Teru Sushi to get more regulars as time goes on, and that more people who appreciate peace and good food to come visit and try their food. I know I may sound very biased, but they won me over soundly and I’m not...
Read moreI have been frequenting this establishment for over 10 years now, i am a sushi lover and have been to several other sushi places all around the valley and i can truthfully say that teru sushi is the best sushi hands down even over the fancy expensive restaurants. I am on a first name basis with the owners phi and Sandy. They have a good clientele base of regulars and always are very friendly and outgoing with each of them and seem to remember all that was going on in life since the last visit. I have been getting the same roll with every meal for years, and phi knows when i walk in i want a jazz roll to start off with. Best sushi in slc. Well kept secret . Each roll is made with the most fresh fish in the valley never frozen phi picks up fresh fish 2-3 times a week. I have never been dissatisfied at this establishment ever not once. I would reccomend the jazz roll the charley roll, and the tuna sashimi. There is also other items not on the menu that you can ask the chef about and he will male it with a smile. I would give this sushi...
Read moreFantastic food, incredibly good price, and lovely customer service! I didn't know these guys were here because it's kinda tucked away but I cannot recommend enough! This is my new go-to takeout restaurant 🥰
The takeout comes in more little containers than I expected and the ones with teriyaki sauce were all well-wrapped -- even though I accidentally tipped one of my bags over on the way home, the sauce stayed contained and didn't leak out into the bag!
Also, BIG fan of the vegetable tempura having kabocha in it! It's a type of Japanese pumpkin/squash and it's got a sweet and nutty taste. Highly recommend if you have not had...
