When I get a craving for that steamed Chinese morsel of incredible taste -- the dim sum -- do I go all the way to Boston's Chinatown? Do I search for the nearest place where I can wave servers with trays and trays of fresh dim sum variety (alas, there's none within a 25-mile radius of Providence)? No, Sir, I drive to King's Garden in Cranston. While the restaurant has changed ownership since I first discovered it in 2011, thankfully, the dim sum quality (as well as that of the other dishes in the menu), has remained. In fact, methinks, improved a tad. The dim sum portions are generous. Not sure what to order? The menu has pictures and apart from the descriptive dish name, you can always ask your reliable server. Best part is the variety of dim sum. Features such popular items as deep fried taro (ok, this one and a few others are not steamed but can you say yum-o!), shrimp dumpling or har gao, steamed meat buns, pork dumplings, sticky rice in lotus leaf (mmm...good) and more. If you are adventurous, you are in for a treat. Try every single item on that dim sum menu to form a preference and solid opinion. They have an online order feature. Neat. But states est wait time for an order is between 20mins-60mins. Too bad dim sum is not included online. Have I talked about the dishes yet? Well, not to be left behind, the dishes are Hong Kong inspired and taste better than the average Chinese spot. Delectable taste and not to equate that with salty. Authentic Chinese food is meant to be tasty, light and not overpowering. There should be a wonderful balance of taste. This place has mostly got it right. On most nights, they are full (not just Friday night), but more so, the Take Out counter. Phone rings off the hook for pick up orders. While I enjoy the food, the service can be improved. One night I went for what I thought was a great idea -- order to-go and be in and out of there in 20 minutes, tops. The place was so slammed they were getting orders delayed and wrong. Owner/hostess ended up arguing with a phone customer. I ended up, 40 minutes later, with a free but undercooked chicken finger -- I mean, WTH? Is this a way to appease me? Undercooked? Also, I do not particularly like chicken fingers (American food) from a Chinese spot. Other than that, I will still run to this place for my dim sum craving for the taste, the convenience and the familiarity...
Read moreBeen coming here for years. But im pretty sure our recent visit might be our last. Gave it the good old 3 times a charm but, but the 3rd time proved to be the nail on the coffin. Only dim sum placed left in RI and unfortunately its poorly run. Waitress who did the speak any english asked me 3 times on 3 different occasions what i ordered. Failed to bring us our correct order. But thats not the icing, our waitress gave us one of our orders, and came back 5 mins later while we were eating it, she proceeded to pick up our plate, take it back and 2 mins later brought back a smaller plate and noticed that she gave the plate that she TOOK from us and gave it to the patrons next to us. I was shocked. Talk about sanitary 😳. I don’t want this to turn out as a book because of the whole experience. So just as a warning, prepare to use sign language, your order being wrong, or potentially get sick or worse, because your might be eating food off of the table next to you. Or even better, from the customers that recently left and they decided to reuse their left overs for your order. I don’t doubt it, my waitress seemed adamant on taking my left overs, and visibly upset, I didn’t leave it.I’ve been a big supporter of this business through the years but somewhere along the lines, lots have been lost in translation, sanitary compass being one of them. Food was mediocre and found alot of our dimsum uncooked and cold. Enter at...
Read moreMoving from Hawaii to Rhode Island, we’ve been looking for a great dimsum joint and I thought we had found a decent place. Unfortunately, we have loved every experience we’ve had here up until today. The service today was quite off and dismissive for a slow Wednesday afternoon, and we were excited to bring a family member here for the first time.
We got waters immediately, but were never asked if we wanted anything else to drink. Our waters were constantly filled but only about 1/2 to 3/4 full only for the waitress to fill the cups of other tables to the top. We put in our first round of dimsum with the intentions of ordering more as the servers here usually ask if we’d like to order more dimsum. We had ordered six plates of dimsum to share between the 4 of us, and when we had finished those, we were given the check. We were quite shocked that we weren’t asked if we had wanted more dimsum or more food, and we honestly felt rushed.
As an Asian and a minority, I’d really hate to pull this card, but upon observing the rest of the dining room, we were the only table who were POC, given less water, less attention, and ultimately, less food lol.
Food is always great here, but off to find...
