Anis Hyderabad House is the one name you see each time you're looking for Indian food/restaurant in St Louis. Me and my husband were very eager to try the place because of all the praise we've heard and we were mighty disappointed.
The service is awful, the food can't be corrected (more on this), and the place has ripped up seats barring the chair and table arrangement. We walked into an empty restaurant hoping the service would be quick and friendly. Nope! We asked for recommendations since we were struggling to pick our choice of gravy. Akhila the cashier simply says all gravies have Indian spices and one of them has coconut milk and the other has nuts making it the special one over the ten other listed gravy dishes. This is her response to a fellow Indian, I can't imagine what she's been telling people who are unfamiliar to the cuisine. After some contemplation we decide to get the Lamb Vindaloo because it's everywhere and you cannot really go wrong with it. Moving on she tells us to grab our own plates and pick a seat and she'd get the food. No problem. We understand it's selfservice.
The Pepper Chicken is served in less than ten minutes. It's piping hot and tastes great. Has an Indian Chinese flavor to it, which we quite enjoyed, but felt the portion size could have been more. We were highly anticipating the Goat Dum Biryani because that is what it is known for. It's a shame. The goat pieces are negligible and most of it is just lumps of fat. The rice has no flavoring, but for some spice in hints. The Lamb Vindaloo has us crying. It tastes like tomato soup. It has a few chunks of lamb and the gravy is inedible. I go up to Akhila and ask her if there is something that can be done and she flatly says once on the table nothing can be done. What?! Did she expect us to walk into the kitchen and approve it before it was served? It's deplorable and it sucks that we've paid over $15 for a dish that is in all probability going to be trashed.
We went out for the sugarcane juice. The man at the counter was friendly, but the juice itself felt heavily watered down and had strong hints of ginger despite asking for a non mixed drink.
We left disappointed because never has the service been this bad and the food so inedible. It's a pity that in a place that has so many Indian restaurants this one is so highly spoken of. Clearly should have paid attention the Google reviews than trusting the...
Read moreUndoubtedly the food here does taste good, but the customer service is absolutely obnoxious making the whole experience very unappetizing! We were there this past Friday and my mother had placed an order for plain noodles, without any vegetables. The girl at the counter misunderstood and placed an order for egg and vegetable noodles. When I took the dish back to the counter to let them know that this is not what I wanted, the lady at the counter begin arguing with me and telling me that's the order that my mother placed. My mother was sitting at the table and she repeatedly kept asking my mother to come back to the counter. I told the lady that I don't know where the miscommunication was I was not blaming my mother and I was not blaming her for taking a wrong order. And I told her I just wanted noodles that my children would be able to eat. She literally argued with me for 2 or 3 minutes. I told her to stop being rude with me because I was talking to her very nicely. I just wanted something my children could eat. She told me once the food was made they could not do anything about it, then I got very angry and I told her to refund all of my money I did not want any of their food. Then some man came from the kitchen and told me that my mother placed a wrong order and if we have something special that we need in our order we need to say it at the beginning. He did end up remaking our noodles but they showed up after we had already finish the rest of our dinner. Are the people at the counter so perfect that they never make any mistakes? And the customer is always wrong? Because is not the first time we have experienced this kind of service at Anis. Any American restaurant you go to, the customer is always right. And even if the customer has made a mistake in the ordering, they remake the food without any hassle at all. I understand why Indian people behave this way with other Indian people. They take the customers for granted. They feel as if even if they give poor customer service, they are going to have return business. Is that how they should be operating? Maybe as consumers we need to boycott this restaurant to teach...
Read moreAs a paying customer I expect my food to be worth every penny which means the food is fresh , well cooked and served with respect. Unfortunately, I couldn't get any of them today. After being a occasional diner for about 2 years, I couldn't feel more sorry for them for such a pitiful and disgraceful restaurant they have become. Today when I went back to restaurant to have fine meal I was served rotten, under cooked meat and when I asked them to take it away gracefully I have gotten back an uncommon, explanatory argument as a response from the waiter and then the food was taken to the trash as told by the chef and then the owner comes back with an intimidated response arguing about the food to be good and had brought it from the trash on to the table where we're having the dinner just to see for himself for a pitiful dish they have sent on to the table. This is not a response that one would expect after bringing a disgusting meal to the table. I am aware by then that the food was prepared way back and reheated in the microwave before coming to the table(as food is served in ~3 minutes from our order) but I at least expect the service to be respectful of the customer for expecting to have chosen this restaurant to have dinner. I am sure there are no standards for this restaurant in case of any before and I would never even think of returning back and would recommend no one to do either. The one star includes only our failed attempt of having a good diner and for this post because restaurant doesn't...
