Read moreContext I love hotpot. I have eaten at multiple places in the country. My favorite as of now if the Happy Lamb in Salt Lake City. The review below is on my aggregated experience.
Overall I would not come back or recommend to anybody. For the price average $50 after base, taxes, tips, and sauce - you can get better service and quality food. A 18% tip is already required during payment regardless of the service. I am applaud by this place. what can they do to make me come back; provide more sauce choices and not charge $.99, truly marinate the meat, be on top of their customer service by remembering their order.
Food the quality of food and broth is decent. For $31 to $36 you get a variety of meat and vegetables. The only downside I felt was the “marinated” meat. It is my favorite and for it to be presented with no flavor I I felt is a representation of their engagement of working there. With that said…
Service it was pretty frustrating. We were a table of 6 and the dining volume during 7pm on a Sunday night wasn’t too crazy. They forgot our orders multiple times. We had to gave them multiple prompts to get rice, noodles, etc… don’t expect for them to give you detailed attention to your needs. You really need to ask for everything. Salt, cilantro, green onions…they have it, but for some reason hiding it in the back. water wise, I felt they were pretty good to check to make sure everyone had water. they are nice and helpful people, however I felt operational wise, there’s a big disconnect between the workers understanding of what good customer looks like and how it should be delivered.
Sauce for me, the dipping sauce is a big part of hotpot and Korean bbq. Sometimes, I got to hotpot just with the dipping sauce as the most exciting thing I want to consume. Guess what, not only you are limited to 5 types of sauce ingredients e.g soy sauce, sesame oil, and their house sauce (no ponzu, pepper, or herbs), it cost $.99 cents to access their sauce. I am not sure why they don’t just integrate the cost into their base price. It makes the you feel disappointed, chested, feeling taken...
Read moreI came here at 9pm because when we called the place, a worker told us the restaurant was packed pretty much all day except around 9pm... When we came around 9pm, we waited 15-20 minutes before we got seated. To save time, we decided on what to order while we were waiting (you're given the menu on a piece of paper, and you mark what you want to order).
My friend and I ordered beef, lamb, fish cake, vermicelli noodes, enoki mushroom, some fried tofu skin thing, and cabbage in the spicy broth.
Once the broth started boiling, we put in some of the food into the broth. It's really really really hot (even after you take it out and rest it in your plate for a while), so I don't know why people are given hot green tea instead of ice water to cool down our mouths when they're on fire. When I asked for ice water, I didn't notice until I was almost done drinking it that there was a strand of a man's hair in my drink. Our plates were also not clean.
Comments about the food: Spicy broth isn't that spicy. The lamb has more flavor, but I prefer the subtle flavor of the beef. The fish cake is so plain and not that great. Don't get it. I didn't like fried tofu skin, although my friend thought it was the best. It was probably because I don't like tofu. The enoki mushroom complimented the meat well; I recommend it. The vermicelli noodles broke into 2390243924034234 little pieces so my friend and I had to search for them. I got way too into my search that I accidentally dipped part of my finger into the boiling broth. Ouch. That happened before we asked for the ice water earlier, so despite the pain, I just had to suck it up... I should have gotten udon noodles...
Service is great. My friend and I were actually the very last customers to leave the restaurant, but they didn't rush us at all. They would still come back occasionally to ask if we needed anything.
Total came out to be ~$44 (not including tip). Probably wouldn't come back here, but it's very popular and usually filled with families,...
