Very good burger and fries combo! They call it a platter I guess because they don’t offer drinks. My daughter sent me a link about this place the other day because she knows I am always looking for the quintessential burger and I love me a good “dive” especially if it involves going to the back of an old convenience store! I walked in and was the first in line, two other guys ordered right after me and none of us waited too long.
I got the classic burger platter and asked them to add bacon which. The meat had good flavor, the bacon was substantial and the lettuce, tomato and pickles were fresh. I assume the bacon accounted for the extra two dollars I paid.
Side note: my favorite place to eat in San Antonio was a very similar establishment but right by our office so I always knew I’d have ketchup at our office. I ordered this meal to-go at John’s and asked for a lot of ketchup. I was given five little packets which I knew wouldn’t be enough but I am always hesitant to ask for more. (I never waste ketchup). I normally have a secret stash in the car but I was borrowing a car with ours in the shop…no luck! I ran out of ketchup but that was not necessarily Johns fault. Still an excellent burger and I’d go back.
Also - as I alluded above, if you want a drink you have to order that separately from the...
Read moreFrom the outside it looks like just another mom and pop shop/gas station, kind of took me for a loop because we thought it was closed. When you step inside and make that left you go down a hall that leads you to a friendly face and some great help with ordering some yummy food. I got the combination burrito for myself, my husband got the 3 bistek taco plate which comes with rice and beans, and we got 2 bistek tacos for our daughter. I also ordered some chips and salsa. It took about 10 minutes for our order to be done. We didn't eat at the location, but if you plan to space is limited on the inside, they do however offer outdoor seating and there's plenty. We got to our destination and our food was still hot and fresh. The bistek was so awesome and delicious, it was tender and no gristle at all. We loved the chips! They add some kind of seasonings that just give it that unique difference compared to other restaurants. I would recommend 100%. If I have to say one thing that I didn't like is that they didn't offer Agua Frescas. But hey, John's Backyard, maybe something to think about adding to the menu...
Read moreEasily the best burgers in a 10 mile radius. Sure, Maple and Motor gets the publicity and they are just fine. I'm glad this place is equally close and is not notorious/publicized. I don't want to have to wait for burgers from this joint. It's in a gas station but don't let that fool you. The burgers are absolutely amazing. I've had the mushroom Swiss, classic and the Mexican. I love them all but the Mexican is my favorite. The burger holds perfectly inside the bun. There is no floppy bun, not too much grease, the toppings are absolutely fresh and it's cooked perfectly. Just a super well rounded burger. I could easily eat two at once but it's better to leave wanting more. The fries are just alright. Nothing special. But the home run are the burgers. The tacos are great also but I'm a burger person and these are my second favorite burgers I've ever had. I like the simplicity and the attention to freshness. No hype, no gimmicks. Just quality. I'm looking fwd to trying other menu items but it's gonna be hard to not get a burger every single visit. Did I mention it's inside a gas station? It's a...
