Lovely place! It was a bit difficult to find, since there are no signs and a construction site is just next to them (don't know how long that's gonna be, but probably not forever). I wish they had some sort of sign on the front of the house, to be more obvious.
We came in on a hot and sunny Sunday. It was in the middle of the day and the place was packed (I have no idea if there's a time of day when there's no line). There's plenty of space outside, a little less inside, but still enough to accommodate a crowd. You can also share tables, if you're up for that (a cool social experiment, if you want to meet someone new). We waited in line for a while, cause it was long and I was actually grateful (this way I had enough time to decide what I wanted to eat - menu has quite some options).
There were two cashiers taking orders (yes, there's no waiter service, in case you were wondering, you have to pay upfront for everything - no idea why they have this system) and it was all going smoothly. We ordered two sandwiches (Chicken Breast and Skirt Steak Sandwich) and two desserts (Strawberry Lavender Cheesecake and Chocolate Marble Cake). Upon your order you get a cute tag (they have a ton of different ones) that you take with you to the table, where you wait for your food and/or drinks (desserts are the only ones you get right at the counter). They offer you free water and don't forget to pick up the cutlery before you sit down - there's a lovely wooden cabinet, where they're all stored.
The food reached us very fast, I don't think we waited more than 10 minutes. Everything was as it should have been and the waiter who brought the food was nice enough to ask whether we needed something else. The sandwiches were delicious, the bread they were made with was proper (not the sugary hamburger bun type, but actual bread) and so were the other ingredients (salad, pesto, cheese, steak, chicken). They could have been bigger for the price though.
The only thing that I really didn't like (and that was MY mistake, not theirs) were the chips that I got as a side. I wish I would have asked for fries, but begin used to saying chips = fried potatoes, I thought I was getting just that (yes, I know, nobody says chips in America, they only do so in England). It was a lesson for next time! But seriously, who eats chips with their meal?! O_o
Oh, the dessert! Yikes, almost forgot! They were both very tasty. Marble cake a bit less (I found it too heavy on my stomach, containing that much chocolate), but I'm not really a chocolate type, so cheesecake was a better choice for me. I couldn't really taste the lavender, but the strawberries were definitely there. Yummy! Try it, if they have it once you're there.
Are they good? Yes, give them a go! Not to mention, the place itself will definitely stick with you for a while since it's a tad hipster-ish. :)
Why only 4 stars? Their prices are not all that friendly, the upfront paying system is a bit obsolete in my opinion and there's a lack of parking spots (you have street parking, but it's best if you leave your car in the shopping centre across the street, if you find...
Read moreBeen a happy diner here since Sideboard was in the old Danville Hotel on Hartz. In its new space across Trader Joe's on Railroad in an old, refurbished historical house, it has a homey neighborhood vibe with both indoor and a lot more outdoor seating in the front, side and back.
Sideboard previously served Blue Bottle coffee. Now it serves Four Barrel coffee. The baristas are coffee foam artists. It's always a treat to see what the design will be (hearts or leaves) with my latte or cappuccino.
Besides breakfast, the delicious menu is the same for lunch or dinner. Food here is healthy, great tasting comfort food. Everything is made from natural, local, organic, and sustainable ingredients whenever possible. My favorites are the Sideboard salads, Cheese Burger, Ahi (seared to perfection) sandwich, BLT (thick slices of bacon with a slab of ripe avocado) and their addictive french fries (love the blue cheese dressing) and homemade potato chips.
Sideboard also has a great selection of freshly, baked goodies too.
Service is low-key here. You order and pay at the counter. You get a "name" stick for your table. When your order is ready, one of the employees will come by your table and deliver it. This places gets crowded.
They don't take reservations. Parking is either street or in the town's parking lot up the street. Don't park in TJ's parking lot because you will be towed.
Super #kidfriendly. Plenty of super clean wooden high chairs. In the women's restroom besides a diaper changing table, there is a toddler size toilet and a foot stool for your wee one to reach the sink.
#DogFriendly -- plenty of help yourself housemade peanut butter doggy biscuits and water bowls. The jar is right next to the...
Read moreLong story short this place doesn’t do anything well. We had to stand in the cold for at least 10 minutes before we got to order. When we ordered a surly teenager (who didn’t know what was in one of the baked goods) took our order. After we payed for our pretty overpriced food we were sad to discover that the only places still available to sit were a giant table which puts everyone far away from each other or a communal table inside. After we were seated a server brought out the drinks for another table to our table, so we had to explain to her that we didn’t order those and some table is currently missing their drinks. The food came quickly, but I was then quickly disappointed to realize all the server did was bring out the food. We had to go back inside to get silverware, napkins, and water ourselves. The food itself was really mediocre and honestly something you would be better off making at home. The atmosphere was also awful with wobbly chairs and music playing at inconsistent volumes. Other things to note about this place are that finding parking nearby is really hard because the restaurant has no parking in front, and most parking lots nearby say no parking for this restaurant. The other thing is the whole restaurant is full of signs that are in your face and feel aggressive. Some examples are signs that say “No laptop use or studying here unless it’s between 3pm and 6pm” and “Taking your own to go bag is a big NO NO. Ask the staff and they will help you get your bag”. All of these little things added up made for a really unpleasant experience, and I can only recommend you...
