Chiba Japanese Restaurant — Restaurant in Darien

After my third time here I decided this place just doesn’t cut it. Though it is conveniently located close to my work, I just couldn’t help but feel snubbed by the service there after this most recent experience. I am allergic to kanikama (fake crab meat) and asked them to sub for a cheaper item (salmon roll) when I ordered the sushi platter (includes choice of California-kanikama roll or spicy tuna roll).

They allowed the substitution after initially saying no, but when I said I was allergic they said they would make an exception. However they ended up charging me extra for the item even though it was actually cheaper on the menu than the item I was substituting.

Also what threw me off almost as much was the fact that the server actually initially said the California roll did not contain fake crab meat. I asked him to check with the chef and he came back admitting that I was correct. I don’t know about you but I feel like the server should know more about the menu items than the customer, and it’s just shameful that they wouldn’t know the basic ingredients of something as ubiquitous is a California roll. Show me a California roll that doesn’t have fake crab meat. They practically don’t exist.

I walked into a strip mall sushi place thinking..uhhh, another tacky bright yellow and green, fake bamboo and sticky soy bottles. HELLO BEAUTIFUL CLEAN UPDATED SIMPLISTIC I AM NOT AFRAID TO EAT HERE PLACE!!!!! WOW! I love the seating, not over cramped and wheelchairs can be accommodated. Greeted, seated, watered and menus... Menus are nice. They are super easy to read. Menus is limited, simple and prices are SUPER AFFORDABLE! ,($38 FOR 2 PPL.. 7 PC SUSHIMI, 2 ROLLS, 1 WINE.) I enjoyed everything, sushimi is generous and fish is fresh!!. The wine selection is large and may look decent because it says Italy, but it is subpar being served with such good food, they could upgrade within the same price range they offer. The fortune cookies are AMAZING! They are cinnamon rolls that are crunchy... Delish! I tried to get a photo of the shrimp but my phone was misbehaving, but it looked amazing! .The service was excellent.. Let me say that again... The service was excellent!!!! Just really nice, friendly., something I actually find lacking in sushi places. I have them 4 stars because if limited creativity and basic menu. But this is also a plus as what they do, they do well and keeps food fresh, but not sure how long it will hold attention. The location is a bit abscure, but worth the stop. Quite the disappointment considering the reviews and ratings. We walked in around 845pm on a Friday night and were met with a dirty look and a grunt. A guy took us to a table, slapping down the menus, and continued to get water and shuffle things around without saying a word. The rest of the night he did the same thing to others and just stood in a corner either on his phone or just looking miserable. The server was a little nicer but everything was very rushed and he even walked away when we were talking to him. Yes the food is cheaper but you get what you pay for as sushi was falling apart and flavors were lacking. I would recommend the Crab Rangoon as it was stuffed full and fried well. Sweet potato tempura was also good but tempura batter had no seasoning. The place had no ambiance... Random decorations, one random TV, nothing covering the bus stations, looked disheveled. Gave it a try but we will not be back and looking for other good...
