Last time we went to this Buona Beef / Rainbow Cone, I purchased the Rainbow Cone Cake Slice. It was pretty and delicious. Even though I'm not a fan of the orange sherbet, the rest of the flavors were so delicious they made up for it. In order of my favorite flavor, the Original Rainbow Cone consists of these flavors; Pistachio, Palmer House, Strawberry, Chocolate, and Orange Sherbet.
If my friends read this and saw that Chocolate was all the way down at four, they would think I've been replaced by an alien clone. But that's how amazing the other flavors are! I'm a total chocoholic and the chocolate ice cream is fantastic, but I have literally never tasted a better ice cream in my life than their Pistachio. Palmer House is a very close second.
What flavor is Palmer House you ask? Well, you can Google it, like I should have done before writing this review or you can trust my palate and believe me when I say that I am fairly confident it is an amaretto flavor with maraschino cherry chunks in it. It is yum!
On this visit, I ordered a small cup of the original Rainbow Cone. Chocolate went on the bottom, then they layered Strawberry on that, followed by Palmer House, then Pistachio, and topped with Orange Sherbet. Even though it's a small, it's still a huge serving. I finished half of each flavor and was so full I thought I would die. But I did get to bring half home to my husband to enjoy.
My 13yo son ordered a large cup of the mint flake. He ate the whole thing but I did manage to sneak a bite. It is the best mint chocolate chip ice cream I've ever had. And since Mint Chip is my favorite ice cream flavor, I've had quite a bit of various brands in my lifetime. This place is a "must" for everyone. I'm already planning on next visit....
Read moreFinally we made it to the rainbow cone shop sharing premises with Buona on Cass Ave, Darien. It was a treat from dad for completing the stone walkway. There was not much crowd and after a short wait we ordered our cones and one to go in a tub for mom and waited. The orders are erratically executed, we got one cones after other within a span of 5 minutes by which time our youngest had already gone through 1/4 of his.
Anyway there's limited seating available and with the pandemic, we ended up in the hot sun sitting on benches. First thing that struck me was the towering heaps of ice cream. Even with the extra priced waffle cones, it was ready to fall off. Next was the person preparing the cone was using a finger, though gloved, to shape it. The scoop of ice cream is not a slice but shaped like one. Lastly the cone accompanies a plastic cone as a means to avoid getting messy. It does not fix the cone properly as needs to be held carefully while eating. The runoff started soon after and by the time it was out of the plastic holder, our hands were messy.
All of us liked it a lot except me. We bought a small size and I savored the first two flavors and after that couldn't discern any. The fear of dropping the ice cream reigns Supreme and the joy of eating gets diminished. Anyway it was a lovely end to a long day.
Today I again stopped by to buy 4 cones and they did not have any kind of carrying thingamajig like restaurants and coffee shops do. When I asked for it, the girls said they were out of it. Had to drive like crazy to get home with these cones in a cup wrapped in...
Read moreAvoid this location. Staff is rude, and they are not wearing any masks. They are touching your ice cream and cones without any gloves either. Gross. They had my order wrong, and didn’t want to correct it. They gave me the side-eye as if it’s my fault that they messed up my order. They are a bunch of young teenagers that feel entitled and feel “bothered” if you ask them any questions or for help regarding the menu. The other locations are much more pleasant and friendly. I Will not be coming back here. The owners need to do something with their employees, and either replace them or train them better, because they are going to lose a lot of business. I’m a food and fashion influencer, and I have told everyone about my bad experience. They need...
